Interesting new feature from Fender. Here is the info and a video

Here's What Fender say about the American Deluxe Strat Plus & HSS Plus:

Fender instruments have always been about great simplicity and convenient modularity—no other guitars are easier to personalize with new parts and hot-rodded features into truly individual declarations. The remarkable new American Deluxe Strat® Plus is the next step in the evolution of that great tradition, giving you three Stratocaster guitars in one with an innovative design featuring easily interchangeable “personality cards” that instantly give you a wealth of versatile pickup and circuitry configurations.
One card comes in the guitar and delivers standard Stratocaster pickup wiring; two extra personality cards are included and let you “rewire” the guitar with specialized pickup and circuitry modifications quickly and easily.

Simply pop the colour-coded cards in and out of the easy-access compartment in the back, and you’ve just modded your Strat in record time. Further, the American Deluxe Strat Plus features fully solder-less electronics that literally make other great circuit mods a snap.
Other fine features include a maple neck with comfortable “modern C” profile and satin finish, compound-radius maple fingerboard (9.5”-14”) with 22 medium jumbo frets, and three singlecoil N3 Noiseless™ Strat pickups with five-way switching. The guitar also has a three-ply mint green pickguard and aged white control knobs, two-point synchronized tremolo bridge with bent steel saddles, Micro-Tilt™ neck adjustment mechanism, staggered deluxe locking tuners and nickel-chrome hardware. Accessories include a convenient carrying case for the two extra personality cards, hard-shell case, guitar strap, cable and polishing cloth.

Yeah, don't know if the card approach will become popular but I think its time that soldering should be out of our lives smile.gif

I am not to sure it will either. I do like the idea I think its pretty cool but also a bit gimmicky and I wouldn't want to spend that much cash on something that I think is a bit gimmicky.

I thought the same when Gibson brought out the mid etune. Cool idea but when forking out that much cash I would prefer a straight up guitar.

I agree 100% with the soldering smile.gif

I saw this at NAMM and thought it would be a great hit... but there has been ZERO buzz about it since then.

Beats a soldering gun!! smile.gif But does seem a bit "gimmicky", which is a tad beneath Fender IMHO. But hey it's a competitive market eh?

Yeah it is a competitive market and I can completely understand Fender product and development team wanting to do what no other guitar company does but for me it still comes down to being a bit gimmicky.

Yeah, must have been late Jan or early Feb, seems so long ago now! Exactly, there has been zero talk about it since then. I almost thought that maybe they'd changed their minds and not gone with it.

It was the middle of January and there wasn't even much interest in the fender room.
Its not exactly a new concept either. In the 70s a company called Electra made a few models called 'MPC' where you could plug in small modules in the back of the guitar for different EQ curves as well as effects.

There's a company called Toneshaper that has an under the pickguard switching system for every possible combination on a Strat including eq variations.
EMG does that too and both SD and Dimarzio have solderless options.

So far, none of its been particularly popular - ?

What companies insist is to try and make their own standards. This imho sucks and cause every repair/modification harder for the guitar player (specially beginner to mid. level).

The 'wiring' cards options that Fender is offering are all (so far) pretty standard mods that a lot of guys and gals do anyway.
For example: adding the bridge pkup to any other combo. That's been a standard 'mod' since the mid 70s. Same for the series/parallel option.
These two very useful and good sounding mods can be done with either one mini switch on the pkguard or with a push/pull pot on the back tone control. Also any tech can do it cheap if you don't want to.

The 'insertion' of little cards is recipe for failure not too mention losing or misplaced cards. A recessed switching system is a much better and more 'pro' approach.

My idea would be standardizing the switch, like S.D. Liberator style easy connections but manufactured that way so it would be much more affordable .
