Listening out for the beat is okay, as long as you keep in time. Have you tried tapping your foot to the beat aswell? I agree with what others have said and wanted to add that you could also try practicing to the beats Here http://freelicks.net/Backing_tracks.htm Start with 60 bpm with whole, then quarter, then eighth, then sixteenth's. Then add to the tempo. This helped me befor I joined.
