Im still on the 6-step beginner course and need help with the metronome.

I can play quarter and eighth notes pretty well but with anything else I get confused trying to count and listen for the click to make sure im on time, is there any excersizes or other lessons out there that can help me?

Also how am I suppose to count out each different note value ie: quarter, eighth, sixteenth, etc....Im pretty sure im doing it right but I dont want to get in a bad habit if Im not?

Thx

These lessons should help you out mate :

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/how-to-use-a-metronome.htm

https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...iming-exercise/

edit: ahh you've seen the metronome lesson i see, wel muris lesson will help you understand different note values better- but apart from that you will just have to spend some time practising to see if you can get "in time". Listening out for the beat is okay, as long as you keep in time. Have you tried tapping your foot to the beat aswell? It can help internalize the beat a bit more smile.gif

Just got back from viewing Muris' lesson and im not sure if thats over my head or not?

I only played along to video one and I can do it but am I suppose to be counting along with it somehow ie: 1st part quarter notes count 1,2,3,4 and 2nd part quarter note triplets 1 & eh, 2 & eh, 3 & eh, 4 & eh is this right? If not do I atleast have the note values correct?

Thx

This one is quite hard to count...

1-and-ah-2-and-ah-3-and-ah-4-and-ah is actually eighth note triplets.

But check this out...

According to the picture, eighth note triplets are twice as fast as quarter note triplets...so we can use the easy to count 1-and-ah-2-and-ah-3-and-ah-4-and-ah and take every other count to get quarter note triplets!

That would be:

1-and-ah-2-and-ah-3-and-ah-Four-and-ah

(i used four instead of 4 because 4 doesnt strikthrough very well wink.gif )

With the downbeats in bold: (so the bold is where the metronome would click, or when you would tap your foot)

1-and-ah-2-and-ah-3-and-ah-Four-and-ah

hard to count indeed...might i suggest to practise this- you call out loud using the 1-and-ah-2-and-ah-3-and-ah-4-and-ah while tapping your foot to the beat..1...2...3...4...

Then call out louder when you hit notes for quarter note triplets:

1-and-ah-2-and-ah-3-and-ah-Four-and-ah

(underline is things to shout/say louder)

Then just stop calling out the strikethrough counts (while still tapping your foot).

This is very hard to do indeed- you will develop a good sense of rhythm practising this!

I agree with what others have said and wanted to add that you could also try practicing to the beats Here http://freelicks.net/Backing_tracks.htm Start with 60 bpm with whole, then quarter, then eighth, then sixteenth's. Then add to the tempo. This helped me befor I joined.

No, that would we 8th note triplets...give my other post a re-read....

quarter notes would be 1 -- ah -- and -- 3 -- ah -- and --.

Gotcha but hitting a note without saying anything makes it a lot harder for me, 1 -- ah -- and -- 3 -- ah -- and --.

Do you always have to count or tap along to a beat while playing or is that only for learning? I can play parts of a few songs right with the cd without counting.....is this a bad habit to get into?

i dont usually count along when i play, maybe tap my foot to keep an internalised rhythm.

but for when practising with a metronome, the underline is where the metronome counts and you play everything but the --:

1 -- ah -- and -- 3 -- ah -- and -- 1 -- ah -- and -- 3 -- ah -- and --

Its quite difficult i agree, just try and aim for evenly spacing 3 notes over 2 beats smile.gif
