Howdy,
Playing around with RiffTracker recording software, first thing I recorded... was going to put a solo over it, but not sure what scales I should use. Any suggestions what would sound good? I started doing a bit of jamming over it with Major & Pentatonic scales, but would love some suggestions, or even better... do some solos over it and re-upload it! Chord Progression goes - G-Em-Am-C-D Thanks Edit: Added a 4 minute Loop of the backing - G-EM-AM-C_DProgression.mp3 This post has been edited by sb81: Jul 7 2007, 02:12 PM

G major would fit nicely over that, or G major penatinic possibly (but not G minor pentainic).

Cool, what if I switch to different scales to go along with chord changes?
Would I go from a G major scale to an A Natural Minor Scale? |

WOOOO, I was right. I feel special. That means im learning something. I thought it was G Major, but really didnt know for sure. I gues though theory lessons. Really do pay off!! Yes, you can play G major over the G an Em chords, then a switch to A minor or A minor pentatonic scale would work over the Am and C chords, then probably back to G major for the D chord (or D major if you feel like it). Actually, A Dorian would be a better fit for the Am chord in this case, since A is the relative Dorian of G - just sounds better than a regular Am scale in this case. Similarly, D mixolydian would be a good choice for the D chord. Now actually what I said above was cheating, because to all intents and purposes, playing the A dorian and D mixolydian means staying with the G major scale - you just start the scales on different note - but it does sound better than changing to the various major scales. Thanks Andrew, I will try the modes out. Will be great as I haven't really played around with modes much, especially not with how they relate to a major scale and "switching" between major scale and it's modes. The examples I gave above are examples of an easy way to get into modes - you are using them is passing, so you don't even have to switch pattern, just be aware that when you are playing a G maj pattern over Am, you are playing Am Dorian, and try to train your ear to hear the A as the root note whilst playing, and you will quickly get a feel for the Dorian mode - same with D Mixolydian. -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile

okay, jammed over the backing for 10-15 minutes and took a few of the ones I liked the best and through them together Here it is, I just stuck with G-Major. Would love some feedback, just keep in mind I've only been playing guitar for four or so months, so don't be too rough. Cool - a good first effort - your note selection/scales were pretty correct so you have that down I would sugest that you work on your bends some more, they weren't quite hitting the right pitch, but that is just practice. Well done! -------------------- Check out my Instructor profile
