Anyone into linux here?
I've been running some linux-servers and occasionally some desktops the last years. Been through RedHat, Fedora, Suse, Gentoo (and some others) and a few weeks ago decided to try Ubuntu. When I had installed it I discovered Ubuntu Studio so I quickly installed that. It's a multimedia OS/app-package for artists. Videoediting, pictures, audio... Ubuntu Studio comes as a iso-image, ready to install but since I already had Ubuntu installed I added the low-latency kernel and the packages manually last night. Now it's installed. Loaded with yummie-looking applications. But. I don't know how to evaluate it. I haven't got into the recording/editing/mixing business yet. Do anyone else have an opinion on Ubuntu Studio? Have you tried it? Is it good? Crap? I'm sure it will amaze me, but I'm a newbie to this so it won't take much for that. Andrew?

Never tried it mate - I'm a Fedora kind of guy for my home server, and I use Red Hat a lot at work ... although I plan to have look at Ubuntu one of these days. Let us know what you find out

Might be a good place to start on finding out about it. I'm surprised puredata and supercollider isn't on the list or maybe I'm reading it wrong. I stopped using desktop linux 4 years ago when I got my Mac. Im getting used to Ubuntu at the moment. Im still learning but it seems very very good if you can be bothered to learn the differences and fiddle about a bit. A great place to look for help is a website called Brians Bedroom. Just google it. There is lots of help all over the internet and basically ive used it to learn the system. Ive been using "hydrogen" as a drum machine, "Ardour" as a studio multitrack recording facility, and "qsynth" for some neat keyboard sounds and so on. I plan to use "JAMin" to master it all at the end but im still going through the basics really. You also really need to learn about "JACK" which is a virtual patchbay ubuntu has that allows you to connect all the different software packages together. For example i can create a drum programme in Hydrogen, and then connect its output to my studio program for recording along with whatever else.
