hello Muris, first off i would like to say im a long time fan of yours and your lessons. good stuff. my question is i have this chord progression that uses Bm F# G D. when i started playing with the chords i was playing in the key of dmajor. So that F# should be an F#m but i for some reason thought it sounds great as a major chord instead. would this be a switch to the relative harmonic minor? i usually dont question these things but i would like to better understand music. also if this is the case can i use the harmonic minor scale over the chords that are derived by that scale (G Bm F#) and switch betwwen the major scale? sorry if im not being clear.

Hello nated, welcome to GMC and thanks for your kind words first of all,
much appreciated. smile.gif

And yes you are right!
This F# chord says that it's about B harmonic minor
so it is switching between D and Bm keys or scales.
However there are few options regarding which scale to use
over which chord.
Over Bm chord you can use either natural Bm or B harmonic minor,
it's totaly up to you and your tastes.
I said Bm and not D major eventho they are relatives and have same notes
but Bm is a chord here so it might be consider it as a root chord,
thus it's also first chord in a progression which doesn't have to be rule.
Over F# it's quite natural to use B harmonic minor
since it's delivered from B harmonic minor.
G chord also offers 2 options, either B natural or B harmonic minor,
again up to you and how you wanna sound.
And finally for D chord you would have to play B natural minor
or D major scale if D was your root in a first place, doesn't matter,
the only thing that matters here is not to play B harmonic minor
which would be quite wrong.

Hope I helped, let me know if I missed something
or if you need anything else. smile.gif

thank you. its good to be clear on this. makes me feel more sure of myself. also on the dmajor = bminor. I always refer to the major scale instead of the minor even when the root chord is the bminor. Its a bad habbit blink.gif
