Only one have mentioned Tom Morello.. I'm so disappointed in you guys! tongue.gif

He's by far one of the most original guitarists of recent times..
Ofc he's not a shredder, but his riffing definately rocks hard!

i'm excited to see how this turns out but i predict that it's going to be way too metal/shred guitarist oriented. learning how to play a style (metal for example) even to a near-perfect degree does not (in my opinion) make a player deserving of "best guitarist ever", it just means you're great at making a certain kind of music. however cliche this sounds, i think most of "the best guitarists ever" are either dead or already honored in best-of lists.

HOWEVER.. i am very excited with this idea, and can't wait to see how it turns out.

What did you learn tonight?
while shouting so loud, you barely joyous, broken thing.
You are a voice that never sings, is what i say.
You are freezing over hell
You are bringing on that end you do so well
and you can only blame yourself, is what is say.

Tom definatly has a very unique style of his own but just my opinion i couldnt say he is oneof the 20 GReatest guitarist of all time.I used to listen to Rage back in the day ,but honestly his style is all effect driven and simple notes. He got really sorry once he started playing in Audioslave. Not saying he's not good but just not my type of player smile.gif

Nobody has mentioned Les Paul, and he has probably the biggest influence on all of us but most don't know it. Invented the Les Paul guitar (Inovator of the electric guitar since he helped create it). Invented Multi-track recording...

We would be nowhere without him.

1. Jimi Hendrix - nobody made more things possible on a guitar
2. Eric Johnson
3. John Petrucci
4. Eric Clapton
5. David Gilmour
6. Jeff Beck
7. Steve Howe
8. Pete Townshend
9. Eddie Van Halen
10. Harrison/Lennon - alone they weren't much to write home about, but they should really be considered. Truly most of us would not be playing guitar if not for the Beatles use and innovation of electric guitar.

I just can't do more than 10, it's too hard to weed others out.

For others to think about: the greatest doesn't represent the fastest, most successful, most influential, or most creative, it represents who makes the guitar the greatest. It is about who lifted the instrument to its fullest potential.

Very well said. This is definitely something we'll keep in mind when it comes down to actually constructing the list.

Oh I thought you meant the facts I mentioned blink.gif . Haha I was going to say...

1. Jimi hendrix
2. Robert Johnson
3. Eddie Van Halen
4. Stevie Ray Vaughan
5. Chet Atkins
6. Andres Segovia
7. Joe Pass
8. Les paul
9. Eric Claption
10. Tony Iommi
11. BB King
12. Chuck Berry
13. Eric Johnson
14. Jimmy Page
15. Jeff Beck
16. Steve Vai
17. Randy Rhodes
18. Joe Satriani
19. Michael Angelo Batio
20. Slash

Ok, I am going to agree with your list except for a few things Spider.

Jimi Hendrix wouldn't be my # 1, I'd add John Petrucci and Yngwie in there.

And remove MAB and Slash.

That can be my list. laugh.gif

You know what, I can understand Slash. I put him there because I feel his playing translates into attitude better than almost anyone. But I can see why he wouldnt belong in the top 20.

However, why do you think MAB wouldn't make the list?

and also, why isnt hendrix your no 1?

Thanks biggrin.gif I think you can tell who constructed each list you can find. This list should be well discussed and we should avoid the little mistakes that other lists show. Anyway, if there's a significant debate about one or more guitarists on the list, you should open a thread for everyone to discuss the outcome.

Well to be honest, I don't think Hendrix should be number one because he didn't take the guitar as far as people think. Pete Townshend did A LOT also but he never really gets mentioned for that.

MAB wouldn't be on my list because I don't think he changed the guitar in a big way. Yeah he did take shred to another level but so did Petrucci and Yngwie.

Thats just my opinion.

that'll definitely happen. I think there'll be a lot of unrest when we debate who deserves the coveted no. 1 spot.

Also, I think there are folks who would hunt me down (and the panel) if we didn't mention some guitarists. If we dont mention Bjorn Berge I think Robin might leave GMC and try to kill me unsure.gif

I think MAB deserves to be on the list and here's why smile.gif I think he is an insanly great guitar player,i believe he was the first person to put 2 guitars together and shred on them with both hands at the same time. That alone i feel should put him up there. smile.gif Just how i feel and i should have put him on my list but i was trying to stay out of the whole ''your just listing metal player's and shredder's thing tongue.gif ''
