Hi,
I have a Peavey Valveking 112. Ive had it around a year and lately it seemed not quite right. When ive got it turned on with my PODxt live etc it seems to make a loud cloudy wind noise, and occassional popping too. Ive also noticed that it doesnt seem to have the same quality it used to have, when im trying tapping it doesnt hold or play the note very well. Ive had a look around and alot of people are saying it will be the speaker and tubes that have went and I should buy new ones cause it will make the VK112 alot better. First of all, is this correct? If so what tubes and speakers should I buy for playing hardrock metal? Where can I buy them in UK? Is it hard for me the install/repair it myself. Thanks and I hope to get a positive result from this, Rowan -------------------- >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Posibly it's the powertubes - 6L6GC
No need to get a new speaker other than to hotrod it. What ppl meant was that better quality tubes and speaker will make it a better amp, not that there's a neccessity to change them. Tubes you can change yourself. Check if they got a sticker with a number 0-9. Then you could get f.ex JJ tubes with the same number and not have to bias. Then it's like changing a lightbulb :-) Otherwise you'll have to bias aswell which makes it a bit harder. The bad sound you have now could come from worn tubes. -------------------- My bands homepage

Do you know any brands I should get? 60 watts is it? Then two. Ask for a matching pair! Speakers, ... For metal or what? Celection Vintage 30 or GT12-75 (slightly scooped for metal). Check what Impedance the one in it has. 12" I belive. So just get a 12" with the same impedance and you're set. -------------------- My bands homepage

Ok im looking into the back of the amp, there are two large tubes that say "6L6GCM-STR" and made by Ruby. Also its just a basic 16 ohm Peavey speaker in the back, and it also says on the top "All Preamp Tubes 12AX7" which I assume are the other 3 tubes in it.
Also this is the only site I know of, do you if its any good or any others: http://www.hotroxuk.com/tungsol-valves-2938-0.html Sorry for double post but I seen these: http://www.voc-rock-guitars.com/Valves-Tub...Duet-valve.html http://www.voc-rock-guitars.com/Valves-Tub...-Sol-ECC83.html Ive always loved Mesa Boogie amps and if I can get tubes like them that would be great... and as for the 12AX7's the Mesa Boogies would be great too but they say 12AX7A..... does the A at the end matter? Or is there another brand you think I should get, at least I know now I need 2x 6L6Gc and 3 x 12AX7 and one 1x12" speaker 16ohm...... MAN LOVE THIS BOARD!!! Dont know if you "need" preamptubes, they last longer than the poweramp tubes so for the sake of replacing worn tubes it's not neccessary. But if you check www.eurotubes.com he sell full sets of tubes for different amp models incase you want everything fresh, including the preamp tubes. Which could improve your overall sound.
That's all you need, he'll see to it that you get the right tubes. He can also sell you speakers and probably recommend you a Weber that will suit your musical taste. I'm not so much for the idea of putting Mesa tubes in it because you like the sound of a Mesa (doesn't some Mesa's come with cheap Chineese tubes even?). That'll fail. Your ValveKing will not sound more Mesa like because of brand choise. But drop Bob at Eutotubes a line, I'm sure he can put a kit together for you. They ship from the US so be prepared to pay customs tax. -------------------- My bands homepage

Thanks, I seen a wiki page for Valvekings and they recommend getting Tung-Sol tubes and JJ so maybe ill just get them.
They have a little guide on how to do it, and to be honest id rather do it myself so I can learn incase I ever have to do it again or for a friend. -------------------- >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I dont play gigs, mainly just bedroom covers etc 2 tubes are probably less expensive than any kind of amp. Plus your Peavey is descent one, it just needs new tubes, you can try some other amp later on, no need to rush. -------------------- Youtube

Does anyone have any videos or guides on replacing speakers and tubes? It's very easy to change the tubes. Your tubes are 6L6 category and if you buy from eurotubes you will probably get just this one (which is a very decent 6L6 tube) JJ 6L6 GC Notice the center big pin, and metal pins around it. On the amp there are slots, so you practically just pull out current tubes, and put it new tubes. CHeck this picture of your amp: Unscrew the metal protection grill that is keeping the power tubes out of reach. Then use a soft cloth to gently hold the power tube and just plug it out. It's easy as plugin out the cable from electrical socket. Just be careful and nudge it side by side a little bit if they hold tight. When you unplug the old power tube be sure to see how it stood (pin position). Put the new tube in as the old one stood in the amp. Couple of things to remember when changing tubes: Before doing any unscrewing/tube swaping make sure the amp was turned off for some time so you let the tubes get cold. This will also allow the trannys to empty the current they have accumulated. Unplug the amp from the wall socket, and after an hour turn on both ON and STANDBY switch (while unplugged from the wall). This will send the remaining current in the amp to the speaker and the speaker will release the current. When handling tubes don't touch them with fingers cause the glass is sensitive to human skin oil on high temperatures. Just use cloth. when handling the tubes. If the tube comes in touch with your skin, just wipe it a bit with the cloth. These are just precaution measures, it's not common to come across any problems, but safety first of course! One thing to know is how to bias the tubes. Biasing the tubes is not a complicated thing at all, it consists of measuring and making both tubes run on the same voltage. I biased my powertubes myself and I'm a complet noob regarding this stuff. There is a nice biasing article with videos on the eurotubes.com here. Best way is to check with Bob via email about bias details for your particular amp. He can possibly send you tubes without any need for you to do biasing. If you do have to do it, don't be afraid, just by yourself a multimeter (I've bought the cheapest I could find), and follow the how to do it videos. It's a piece of cake, just measure the voltage on the amp, trim the pot so you get matched voltage, measure again to make sure everything is alright and you're good to go. Possibly on your amp there is no need to do biasing at all. This post has been edited by Ivan Milenkovic: Jun 3 2009, 09:57 PM -------------------- - Ivan's Video Chat Lesson Notes HERE

Thanks alot, im going to get 2 x JJ 6L6GC tubes then, pop them in, and I shouldn't need to rebias them correct
As for a speaker, I take it the most popular is the Vintage 30, but ive also noticed the ManoWar which seems cool. Any other suggestions. Also, is it worth sticking some matching JJ 12A7X's in it too? I would get a CAB but tbh, I live in a ground floor flat and last thing I want to do is create more noise, im more about getting more tone rather than volume. Btw thanks for all help so far, really appreciate all this This post has been edited by Rowan: Jun 3 2009, 10:07 PM -------------------- >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

and I shouldn't need to rebias them correct ONLY if they new pair matches the old. Check your old ones and look for a sticker with a single figure on it. If you have one, ask for tubes with the same figure. If you don't have such I'm afraid you have to bias after all. -------------------- My bands homepage

Peavey Valveking 112 w/ 1 x JJ 6L6GC PAIR http://www.hotroxuk.com/jj-electronics-tube-6l6-4781-0.html 3 x JJ 12AX7 (ECC83's) http://www.hotroxuk.com/jj-electronics-tub...ax7-2195-0.html 1 x Celestion Vintage 30's 50WATT 16OHM http://www.hotroxuk.com/vintage-30-4956-0.html TOTAL VALUE: £136 Or im thinking about the TUNG-SOL 6L6GC's cause they are supposed to have alot more tone This post has been edited by Rowan: Jun 3 2009, 10:36 PM -------------------- >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

JJ is cool brand and so is Tung-Sol, Celestion is top class speaker ass well BUT do not except to get new or different amp, it'd still be your good old Peavey, nicely tuned tho. -------------------- Youtube

Yeh I loved my Peavey, but to have it sounding better would only make me happy.
I hope they come soon and there easy enough to fit. I ended up spending £140 Also, I noticed on the back of the stock Peavey speaker it says 8 OHMs but ive ordered the 16OHMs V30... But when I got the details from the UG Valveking Wiki page it says: 112 50W Combo 16 Ohms only Is it safe what ive bought? Your choice is good, but I don't understand why you didn't check the impedance on the amp before buying a new speaker. Check the back of your amp, the speaker out should have labeled impedance. Read the labeled impedance on the amps speaker out and buy the speaker with the same load, it's as simple as that. If you get a speaker with wrong impedance, it is safest to return it back and get a proper one, cause it can only damage your tone/amp.
let us know what you did mate. cheers Your choice is good, but I don't understand why you didn't check the impedance on the amp before buying a new speaker.
