Trouble Picking Options

Help !!!!! been practicing with a metronome for years , still suck but have worked up alt. picking to120 bpm 16 notes per beat. when iwas slower wound tend to dip pick into the strings causing much string slaping type noises now my picking smoother but my fingers lock and i am not holding the pick tight enough so the pick slips out

Well mate, there's no one way to make what you want to happend. But you have to find your own way, take the pick with some strenght (not to hard so you won't damage any part of your fingers, and not to soft so the pick won't slip off), also you might want to regulate the "amount" of the pick you place deep into the strings when you play (Paul Gilbert for example has that slappy and very marcatto sounding because he plays with a certain angle to the strings).

So I think everything about the picking is related to the balance. And you're gonna to find out for yourself because is something that everybody could give you tips but eventually the final work is in yourself and to decode your own way to deal with those difficulties.

As Ramiro said, choosing the right picking grip balance is the key. Take some time to analyze the picking technique and see what you can come up with regarding holding a pick. You must hold it so it doesn't slip off and that you don't grip it too hard. Also be careful about the angle of the pick. If you dig in a lot, and you don't hold it parallel with the string, it will tend to fall out of the grip.

Don't hold the pick so tight, you must be able to regulate amount of volume by tightening and loosening the grip. First, you must be able to play with loose grip(not to loose, sound must be solid), later you will develop some control. 120 is a good speed.
