Suppose you are learning a new piece and it is not stated which is the preferred approach: How and when do you decide what approach you are going to take to picking.

I seem to only focus on alternate picking when I practice a lesson (where it is stated to alternate picks) or when you are running scales other licks.

Other than that, I seem to almost use what I think one call Economy Picking.

Ala, I do use up/downstrokes but if I am moving down a to a lower string i use a downstroke and when I move up to higher I upstroke. But I do not do it consciously, I am really just following feel.

I practice everything alternate picking, unless stated. And when I play I seem to go with feeling more than technique? But in some cases, I think I do this because the lick is difficult and i change my picking pattern to stay at tempo and execute.
