Not bad at all, sure there's still room for more "human factor" but sampling has come to a good point of usability.

So the usual argument is will these programs replace us

To my observation, drum vsti was the first to be considered "finally realitic" years ago, specially after drum replacement got popular. It's certainly easier to add more human factor by midi parameters with vsti and while drummers can detect very fast whats human and whats vsti, listeners can't always...

But what average listeners do feel is vibe and though not knowing exactly whats going on, they feel more comfortable to concentrate enjoying music when it comes to human vs machine drum playing (specially if its not dance music ). Homestudio guys who take their music serious usually starts searching drummers first to take their song from demo to art.

I believe strongly this will happen with guitar too no matter how popular these vsti's get, infact if you're a studio guitarist and someone approachs to you with a really low budget advice him to test these stuff first...sooner or later he/she'll be back to hire you more motivated (chance of better payment) and also there's a good chance you won't have to compose for the guy in the middle of the session as he knows what he wants more compared to his first approach to you

Very cool! Even though I don't feel threatened I find this very interesting

I doubt it will replace guitar in riff based music where the touch of the guitarist is part of the musical hook. But it can probably be extremely useful for drafting songs or real productions where guitar is needed as a background layer.

Good point, some might feel more comfortable while composing with something like this as they don't have to keep recording the guitar while experimenting.

Also, when composing if the student is still in the learning process usually they can't "imagine" compositions on faster metronome settings, like a fast solo with sweeps for example. The risk here is they might end-up with something imposible to play

Since I'm in the unusual position of being on both sides of this: a person who writes virtual instruments and a guitarist, I'll share this opinion: Yes, I could write a virtual instrument that is capable of the wide range of expression achievable with a guitar (as opposed to the rather mechanical performance in the Ample demo), but the complexity of controlling all that expressiveness would make it even more difficult to master than a real guitar, even for an experienced keyboard player. So, aside from the sketching usage you mentioned, nobody is doomed .

P.S. My vote for the best guitar virtual instrument currently available would be Electri6ity.

Maybe not "replace" but certainly "add on" I think this kind of thing is great for writing, and sharing, and for folks that don't play quite what they want to but want to hear what's in their head played out in music form. It's a way better sound than GUITAR PRO for sure!!!

I do hope folks don't use it as an excuse not to practice and get better though. But i doubt they will. After all, what's better than playing what's in your head? Zip.
