Criteria:

1) I am happy with simple things, I think an optical zoom would be nice, but just want something very basic.
2) Would like good picture quality (good enough for high clarity on youtube).
3) Would like good sound quality.
4) Want to spend as little as possible (to give you a point of reference, I don't see a rat's tush of a difference in the picture of my old 3.1 mb nikon coolpix and a 7mb camera). I don't want to spend for stuff that is pretty insignificant to any casual observer. Just the essentials that all would universally agree on.

Thanks!

I had very little experience with camcorders and i can only tell you which one am i using for lessons:

Sony DCR-HC24 - it was around 390$ when i was buying it half a year ago and i bought it in Croatia so i believe it's cheaper in America.

Also, little tip: if you plan on using it for YouTube - YouTube has a small resolution FlashPlayer just like GMC so if you record a video on resolution of 800x600 and later use video editing software for rendering - you can easily render it at 320x240 and add a low SHARPEN effect and you'll get awesome picture.

Btw. what you see in my lessons - i don't know why but in the lessons the video quality is worse than i have it rendered on PC. I think the system of GMC does some kind of re-compressing when i upload it. When you get your camcorder i can help you with video settings for rendering! smile.gif

No m8! I bet your cam-corder is WAY better than mine - it depends on how you edit your video and how you compress it! smile.gif

I've never thought of your videos as having bad quality. Thanks. There is a Sony HC28, HC24 may be European. Looks like same features, and as you said, cheaper. I will think about that for the next week, looks decent.

If you plan to move what you record to a computer I suggest you get a cam coder with a built in harddrive, I don't have one but I supposes a HD would make it less a hassle compared with tapes.

EDIT:
I will read all the recommendations with great interest too since our cam coder went wierd, I can play but for recording the screen went black. Maybe it can record anyway, I will try. But for the record it's a bad camera so I will enter a second criteria thta I think is important, more than resolution really.
1'st - A built in harddrive
2'nd - Being able to record in darkness. Mine was supposed to but when I do it's all choppy and blur

If you could see the vids on my hard drive before uploading - they have better quality than after uploading. So you can imagine than how good the picture is!

HC-28 was pretty expensive here when i was buying camcorder so i guess you can easily get it!

HD Camcorders are much more expensive - at least in Croatia. The hard drive makes it attractive but considering i only use mine for firewire streaming - i don't need one as i always stream directly to PC.

what is the advantage of hd? I figure multi gb flash cards are cheap, what can you do with a hd that you cannot do with flash memory?

edit: oh, I see this one does not have flash, it is tape.

Yeah! Those HC are TAPE recorders! But it was the same to me as i explained above! And - just as you - i didn't want to spend enormous amount of money on it!

Let us know what you get when you decide what to buy! Would like to know! smile.gif

Also, don't confuse HD with Hard Drive - HD on its own usually means High Definition, which in turn usually means immense cost!

You can't confuse it in small camcorders because High Definition cameras cost MUCH MORE than these amateur camcorders! smile.gif

All I can do is tell you about mine, it's pretty expensive but it will shoot whatever you want whereever you want. it's also digital and has it's own Mini DVD in it that you can record to. It's a Sony DCR-DVD92, Carl Zeis model. We use it every where we go and it takes great videos of anything. Maybe you could find a used one on Ebay or something?

you lost me when you said "pretty expensive". smile.gif

the one Pavel talked about (actually the 28) has pretty good reviews on amazon. Worst was 3 star from some dufus who could not figure out how to hook it up to his computer.

Part of my buying decision is based on using $300 gift cards I have at BestBuy. But I will look at what they have in DVD and consider that, so thanks.
