as a european scientist I did the classic US postdoc time ( in my case: 3.5 years in Boston and 3 month in NY). The 3 month in NY were the best time of my live. The city has just one negative side: expensive
Anyway if you want to do the great museums, the city pass makes sense. I love the Guggenheim but you need to be in line reeeaaaly early otherwise you will wait for hours. The city pass def. saves time. Btw the top of the rock is much better than the ESB observatory. However, if I remeber this right with the city pass you can either do Guggenheim or the rock. You have a nice view on the EmpireSB form the rock and the waiting time is much shorter. If you got time the MoMA and the MMoA are a must. For music check out the Terra Blues for everything bluesy, the birdland and the bluenote for jazz. The smalls is also a great dive type of jazzy place. They are all in the west village (except the birdland: hells kitchen) for everything hip in the world of indie and beyond (if you don't mind beeing among hipsters) check ot the music hall of williamsburg, the mercury lounge or the bowery ballroom. For really great, fancy food check out the http://www.bluehillfarm.com/food/blue-hill-new-york. however its expensive (30 + for entrees) or http://www.jean-georges.com/ (nobody can afford dinner there but check out their lunch specials---often rather a steal and you get great food) or the readhead http://theredheadnyc.com/menu/ (more affordable) this is a great place and is affordable http://www.antibesbistro.com/. At least was 4 years ago. BTW if it is not too cold go to the Brooklyn side and walk on the Brooklyn Promenade (best view on Manhattan other than from a boat or heli) and walk over Brooklyn Bridge back TO Chinatown. have lunch at NY noodletown (inexpensive and good ) Have fun This post has been edited by ItSME3: Feb 2 2013, 01:01 AM |

I've had a number of people tell me the Top of the Rock is better than ESB and I certainly want to do that. Besides... the ESB is the tallest structure at the moment and It's hard to get a pic of it if you're standing on it I really hope we have time for the MoMA and the MMoA but we have 6 days so fingers crossed. @sensible jones - thanks for the hook up I have messaged your friend @ Ben - Thanks and I have all 4 of the Above Suspicions Like I said I am a huge fan LOL!! Did you see him in Rome? And now he will be Mance Rayder in the new season of Game of Thrones... I'm a little excited. I know refer to Mance as Freezer Caesar @jouve - Thanks for the suggestion. I have heard the lines can be pretty crazy... kind of why I don't want to do a lot of the touristy stuff. I'm really looking forward to the trip. I'll be sure to let ya know how it went thanks again guys Susan |
