So it's like a baritone guitar; longer neck and tuned lower than the usual guitar? Sort of. 'Baritone' guitar is tuned either a 4th or a 5th below standard guitar. This octave mandolin is tuned a full octave below the standard mando with a scale of (usually) 22 inches. It's analog in the guitar world would be a contrabass guitar or what we commonly call a Bass VI (Fender). Not to be confused with a 6 string bass (tuning is different). Below that is what's known as a Mandocello, tuned an octave and a 1/4 below standard mandolin with a scale of 24 3/4 (Gibson Les Paul scale length). It's not uncommon to convert a Tele to a mandocello. *Then there is the Mandola ... in between the standard mandolin and the octave mandolin. The viola of the mando family tuned CGDA.
