what are they?

i noticed on some guitar stands it says not suitable for nitro lacquer finishes...

It's a coating applied to some guitars.

My guitars varnished and it hates stands too tongue.gif

so does the guitar make normally tell you when its a nitro lacquer finish?

so normal gloss finishes and satin finishes are fine?

Gibson (but not Epiphone) tends to use nitro cellulose (for, say, SG and Les Paul). Fender doesn't anymore, but their vintage models and other "replicas of the past" do have nitro cellulose finish. ESP, Ibanez etc. tend to use polyurethane (like newer Fenders). Generally, nitro cellulose is more expensive, so mostly you'll find it used on older or higher priced guitars (read: SG-price and up).

But it would be a good idea to check with the manufacturer. A nitro cellulose finish subjected to a bad stand isn't pretty wink.gif Also, don't take for granted if a stand doesn't say "not recommended for nitro cellulose finish guitars" that it is recommended wink.gif Too may stand manufacturers don't seem to care much about their customers.
