The fine folks at OVERLOUD released a modulation plugin a bit back called MODULA. It’s not y our average modulation plugin though. It combines some of the most loved modulation rack effects ever made. It’s not a complete collection as there are other units to be sure. However, they picked some of the best vintage units and packed them in to a single plugin.

I found it actually when MERTAY shared a news item that one of the bits of MODULA was being offered for FREE from overloud. I tried it and loved it. Then I tried the full version of the plugin and liked it even more.

What makes it so special? First off, it includes a very good emulation of the legendary YAMAHA SPX90 rack mount unit which of course features the legendary “SYMPHONIC” preset. This is an expansion of the SPX90 that is part of Oveloud THU. The one in THU has much more limited controls and doesn’t let you stack two units in the same plugin. In modula, you can stack two SPX90 units and start them at the same parameters and then change one to create huge stereo effects just like folks used to do when they would use two physical units in a studio. Zakk Wylde’s tone was based largely around this very unit, as were a ton of other players in the 90s.

Secondly, it emulates the legendary ROLAND DIMENSION D which was used on a ton of records and is still a sought after unit that costs several thousand dollars even today. This unit was the go to unit for vocals in the 80s/90s. It also works on just about any instrument. You can also press more than one button at once to get more complex effects.

Lastly it uses the ENSEMBLE ARP modulation unit which was built in to a synthesizer focused on string sounds. The ensemble circuit works great on synth and strings.

The presets are a great place to start and are quite usable. Of course, you can create your own as well. The units generate very musical harmonics and can be driven via the input knob. You can create huge width effects and make things sound very nice and expensive. Here is a vid with more info.

This is a quick test with electric guitar that I recorded.
