Hey hey hey...

Time for some pentatonic fretboard freedom! biggrin.gif

In the next lessons we will have a look at some patterns/licks/approaches to use with this "horizontal thinking".

Enjoy the lesson!

/Kris

Kris,

The flash player you use your videos with may work great with new computers but I have a compaq with a 1.2gz processor and your videos are coming through very choppy and broken up. Is there another way to view these videos. Just to choppy to watch some of them?

p.s. I have upgraded to the latest version of flash player and according to thier faqs you only need 450mz processor and I have twice that?

It all depends on what chord is being played when you switch boxes. If your in the standard I-IV-V song.. and your in the IV chord, you would slide into that note.. or you can slide into others to give different effects to the improv. Atleast that is how I understand it to be.

Flash is the most supported video format on the internet - therefore the GMC has switched to it. I understand some still have problems viewing it but I don't know the technical solution at your end.

Maybe try "cleaning" the system with something called "CCcleaner" - or asking the folks at www.videohelp.com . Since the video is streamed a bit of new RAM memory might help you...?

Sorry I can't give you a better answer...! sad.gif

Kris,

When watching your "pentatonic one on one" were you actually picking each and every individual note as you were flying through the scales? Or were you doing some sort of pull off/ pick with all fingers of your right hand kind of thing? What do you recomend for such speed building?

thanks..........

Hey KirkHammettfan,

Yes I pick all the notes in those runs (the pentatonic ones). We'll be dealing with that question the next two lessons (stay tuned next monday).

Basically you need to practice two note per string runs instead of the very common three notes per string runs.

Practice this kind of pentatonic run:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/memberson.../The_motto2.htm

I also believe there are stuff like that in the Curious Coincidence lesson. You can be incredibly fast at 3nps, you still won't stand a chance picking 2 nps if you haven't practiced it...

You know Kris, there are lot of beginners that find this pentatonic or pentatonic blues scale very simple and are not lured into it until you unleash a fast connecting box accending/decending scale run. Look at Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde, Steve Ray Vaughan for instance. If you slow Randy Rhoads down very slow, what do you see! Zakk and SRV as well. They put a hell of a lot of hammer on and pull offs to make this fluid, but also alternate pick at stealth speeds right across the whole fretboard.

I think this scale is a keyway to advancing to a better guitarist. I have often had students that could shred like S. Via. but when I put the pent. scale for them to work on they were lost so to say.

This is a very important scale to be able to play at will anytime, especially if you are lost in the middle of a signature solo and want to add lib to it.

There was one thing about SRV though, he could stay in an A pent box while playing a 3 chord blues solo (A, D, E) and never play the same lick over twice. Lots were from his strength and lots from his feel. SRV was quoted by one of his band members; "Stevie would stay up all night alone in the studio, and I would never hear him step out of the envelope or play the same lick twice". This was like 8 hours of playing. Maybe that is why he went platinum by the age of 25.

Thanks for the pent. tid bit...

Regards,
Darrell S.
