10 String But What Are Those Knobs?, Also, using 8th string to go above high E rather than below low B. Options

I actually like the way this looks But can anyone tell me what is going on with those knobs? Also, I hope we start seeing more multi scale guitars with strings above high E rather than all the strings hogging in to the bass register.

I have thought about stringing my Rusty 8 string the way Rusty does to add a string above high E as I honestly as NOT digging the low F#. It's too low to make power chords with, it doesn't sound great with distortion IMHO, and scales run down that far start to loose definition.

This is my third 8 string guitar so far and I've tried to give the platform an honest go. I am starting to think that the 7 is just a better approach in terms of the low B and perhaps it's time to go above high E rather than below Low B.
