Hi Guy's, I need some advices here... In order to play some of the scary lessons, I learned that I must have an axe with a better trem. than a standard Strat one. So I decided to re-build my Warmoth for this purpose, but don't know what kinda trem that really is the best. When I was Young (in the beginning of time) Floyd-Roses ruled, is it still so? What about trems that can replace a standard one without drilling in the body?

Any suggestions???

TIA

I'm not fond of floating tremoloes myself but I'd say Floyd Rose (not their low end series), a Gotoh I think has the exact same measures and good (better?) quality. Kahler could be an option to look at.

Oki, thanks, I see... have You experienced the Wilkinson's? Even that they dont seems to be "floating" they have an other construction than regular Fenders. I had some guitars with Floyd's a long time ago, and they worked well. I was just wondering if there has been some evolution on the topic since I've been away from music for many years....

Just by replacing it with a two point fulcrum model it will help!!
Otherwise you'll have to re-rout for a Floyd-Rose. Unfortunately a Kahler won't fit as the body is routed already! (Kahlers just need a rout in the top of the body and not all the way through it!

I think WIlkinson makes some good tremolos. In addition to that you will need better nut, and possibly a top lock to really keep it in tune.

Are the Wilkinsons more "floating" than the regular ones ??? I have a graphit nut on this guitar, will this do? Or should it be replaced by a locking device???

Not 100% sure on any of the questions to be honest, but all I can say is that I've read some excellent reviews on Wilkinson tremolos throughout the net. I never heard anything about being more floating than the regular ones, not sure if it can be "more floating". If the tremolo floats, then it floats, don't understand how it can float more. Possibly if it is further away from the body, but that would make the action higher I guess... Anyway, the main thing that lots of people say is that the tone and sustain are improved with these.

I have a Wilkinson on my Warmoth strat. It's pretty decent. ... about on par with the trem on my PRS.
It's not a locking variety, but with locking tuners, it stays in tune pretty well. (unless you've got a Corian nut, like the one on my strat, then it can be a problem, but the PRS with graphite nut is fine.)

As for doing dive bombs, and other scary stuff like that, I'd recommend a Floyd rose or equivalent. I've got an early Ibanez that with "licensed by" Floyd Rose that's pretty good. The locking trems that I've played not only stay in tune on those deep dives, the have a lot more leverage and can loosen the strings really really loose (like one Scorpions tune that I don't remember the name of right now where you can hear the strings just rattling around on the fretboard biggrin.gif )

Anyway, good luck with your search. There are so many products out there, you kind of have to think long and hard about what you are wanting to accomplish before going for it.

What I was meaning of a "floating" tremolo is such that isnt' nailed to the body itself with 5 screws or something similar, rather attached with two bolts like the Floyds and then have the trem to "hang" on these bolts....

I've done some researches on Wilkinson's and found out that they are out of stock, since the company doesn't exist anymore, or am I wrong here??? Anyhow Gotoh seems to produce them now. Mainly they got two models, a vintage one with 5 screws (which is actually on par what I got on the guitar by now, but a Schecter one) and some kind of Floyd like-trem but without fine-tuners. Which one do You have ?

aha, you mean 2 point system, where you have 2 pivot screws that serve as the contact area. Sorry for misunderstanding.

That's the ones I meant by 2 point fulcrum. It means that the Tremolo is only attached at 2 points. (knife edges, they're sometimes called) That's exactly what makes them more 'floating' than a vintage Strat Trem. To get them so they go 'up as well as 'down is quite tricky! It can be done but takes a lot of time and patience to get it just right! Anyway, Muris only needs a Trem that goes 'down'!!

As for makes?
Gotoh, Wilkinson (they are still being made!!) and Fender even make their own one too.
A Graphite Nut should be fine but for extra tuning stability install some locking Tuners as well. I recommend Sperzels but others are available!
