1. John Mayer has played NOVAX guitars, which feature Bartolini pickups and fanned frets.
The technology behind the fanned fret design "makes sense" but I'm unsure if it is all that noticeable. http://novaxguitars.com/ 2. ZOG Strings feature balanced tension guitar strings. This Zachary guy is a Hilarious read if you want a chuckle. He's considered a radical in guitar circles, much like Ed Roman was. I bought some sets of strings from him, and I could tell a little difference in tension, but not really tone. This guys also claims the ONLY guitar you can put 9's on is a tele. I prefer 10's, and he also has a 10+ set. they are alright. I just can't take the website seriously. Hours of entertainment here. http://www.zacharyguitars.com/Strings_Products.htm 2.5 Since, D'Addario has come out with balanced tension strings, so maybe there is something to it? http://www.daddario.com/DADProductDetail.P...52-cd30c0238f66 3. Now this one I LOVE and am not kidding... the EZ Peg. It is brass acoustic pegs, milled to where the string can go through the peg. It takes a lot of guess work out of it for beginners, and the way it works allows for less wear on your bridge. It does brighten up the tone a but, add some lovely vibrations to the body, and I believe it sustains longer as well. A cheap and reversible upgrade! http://ezpegsystem.com/ 4. Broken - in speakers? Hellatone takes a celestion Vintage 30 and "breaks them in" for hours so you don't have to. Is this really necessary, or it just a gimick? I know someone on this forum has had to use these before, and am interested in your thoughts on it. http://www.avatarspeakers.com/hellatone.htm 5. This last one, I'm not sure about Tonerite is something you plug in and hook onto your stings, the vibrations after a few days "simulate playing" and open up the guitar to sound more open and better... as if it had been playing for years. I see the science behind this, and it makes sense to a point, but I"m not sure. I'd like to chip in on one, and maybe we could borrow it for a few weeks to see if it is legit? https://tonerite.com/ I could go on and on, but these are the ones I'm thinking about that could generate some good discussion! -------------------- As me about my Michigan-based handwound Great Lakes Guitar Pickups. It's all 'real'.
How useful it is depends on how much you like the results. Fanned frets and equal tension necks/strings have around for a long time ... they never really catch on other than with a few players. The Tone-Rite absolutely works. Many techs use them. Before this device many luthiers and acoustic guitar players, when they bought a new instrument (or found an unplayed for years older one, would put the guitar on a stand in front of a stereo speaker that was playing music for a day or two. Speakers def have a Break-In period. Again - nothing new or revolutionary. High end speaker cos. will break in speakers before they're sold. Trust me ... buy a brand new cab and play it for 5 hours straight at a medium to loud volume. You'll hear it change. *Some guys think that instrument and speaker cables need to be broken in ... ? Tone-Rite only works on acoustic insts.
I personally don't buy 'broken-in' speakers but only because it just takes about one gig or rehearsal to break them in. To each is own. -------------------- - Ken Lasaine

Some people like gutar amp speakers to be burnt in for the simple reason that they have gotten used to the sound of their old cone. A new one can often seem quite bright compared with an old one. Whether it's worth breaking in a speaker to get this is, I'd suggest, subjective. It's also worth remembering though that a speaker will deteriorate with age, the cone has a memory effect based on hysteresis and the suspension will suffer fatigue and eventually collapse, the coil wll also suffer fatigue. Some, not all, high end speaker manufacturers don't burn in speakers as it artifically ages the speaker and so reduces it's life. -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer.
