Ran across this little free VST called GClip, very easy to use and surprisingly effective. I've used it in my master signal chain with some great effects, Old songs I have that had some clips in the mix are completely brought down to a normal level.

I run this, EQ > GClip > W1Limiter >GClip, and it can really boost the volume without ruining the dynamics. Maybe not a boost to a professionally mastered CD, but it does a good job nonetheless!

If you're not going to mastering and want level then GClip can be very useful. One of the nicer things about GClip is the variable soft knee - which can help a lot with the transition. Also, and like Uncreator is doing, you're better adding small amounts of limiting in several stages rather than a lot all at once.

If you're going to mastering though it's best to leave limiters off the 2 bus.
