Hi, if you first start the POD gear box (software) you can select the sound you want to use. If you get sound from your headphones or spearkers you know you're doing it right.
Start your recording software, whatever that may be; if you're new to this maybe you don't have one. Reaper is a popular choice that's also cheap. If you just want to record one guitar and no more there are probably freeware around for you.
In your software you select Options->Audio and chose ASIO as your sound driver.
Hit record.
Play your piece.

Hope that helps. Maybe I forgot something but I'm sure you'll get all parts together from the replies you get.

EDIT: Your X3 connects to your computer via USB

Kind of like MickieM said, you'll need the following:

1. Your Pod.
2. Your computer (obviously biggrin.gif )
3. Go to line6.com and download "Line6Monkey" onto your PC.)
4. A USB 2.0 Cable (I think one comes with the POD).
4. Connect the Pod to the PC and run Monkey. For some steps Monkey will ask you to power down your pod. Make sure to do this when it asks.
5. Monkey will downlad and install the required drivers for your pod for your specific operating system. It will also install "Gear Box" which is basically a patch editor for your PC. I found this to be absolutely essential for editing of presets. Monkey does a great job at making this software installation very easy.
6. Once you get your POD hooked up, you will have to install some sort of recording software (Like Reaper) and configure it so that it can utilize your POD. I don't remember now if the POD comes with a simple softwware recording package or not. But as MickieM said there are a bunch out there. Some of them very in-expensive if not free. Do a Google search for "DAW" (Digital Audio Workstation).

It's kind of a steep learning curve especially in the begining, but well worth it. The X3 is just an awesome unit. Take your time exploring all of it's vast capabilities. You will be able to get some great tones for sure. Congrats!.
