It looks like APOGEE has partnered with AVID and doubled the price of the previously spiff APOGEE DUET for no reason. You can get the APOGEE DUET for about $500, but the "AVID APOGEE DUET" is FREAKING DOUBLE!!! @ about $1000

I gotta say this seems insane. What on earth makes them think it's worth double because it has an avid logo on it? I scanned the specs and don't see anything to make it worth that much. maybe it's just me, anyone else hear about this?

Maybe they got inspired by the Vertex wah incident? huh.gif

I am happy to already own the duet, for this new price I might have chosen a different path (although i am happy with the interface).

It looks like it is actually being sold with ProTools 11 as well. So that makes way more sense. As the Duet is what like $500 and ProTools is $600?

Seems a bit steep IMHO. WHen they bundle software in, they will usually chop it down a bit. Seems like they are trying to charge list.

I paid an extra $100 NZD for a Furman Power Conditioner "Plus" model... what's the differences?
It has a voltage meter display at the front.

Totally worth it!

I can see voltage actually adjust when the AC is turned on, under or overload for example, else I would of had no idea why my bedroom power was so dirty and getting interrupted, or if the power conditioner was actually doing anything. It's seriously some crazy physiological reasoning of my brain to justify costs.

1) it's Avid so not a lot of discounting.
2) Avid is in bad financial shape. Delisted from Nasdaq and their stock is down 85% from it's height in 2004.

*I'm sure it will 'street' for less.

They really are circling the bowl. They are moving along on momentum it seems. Leeching off of the installed user base. A great example of how to squander a bit lead. I'm guessing someone else will snap them up and integrate them before too long.

I saw recently that BBC is switching out from AVID and moving to FCPX which was a bit of a shock, considering how far FCPX still has to go. But still, it's a good example of a large buyer moving towards a simple, software only, off the shelf solution and away from AVID.

There are reasons why PT is often mocked as 'Pro Fools' in the industry...

For a long time part of the strategic policy at the Beeb has been about 'value for money'(VfM) with regard to production costs. I can't speak for video but with regard to audio the Beeb are always a bit interesting in hardware and software choices. The Beeb likes sadie and has used it for years and the current preferred daw is the full blown version of sadie. The Beeb pay for x number of end user licenses on a typical corporate deal with sadie in line with this and it is there for use on major productions; low budget/profile productions are expected to use a different daw as sadie is kind of regard as 'overkill' for a small production. It may well be that the Beeb has decided that the cost of x number of Avid end user licenses for all video is too much and so either restricts Avid to a limited number of high profile/budget, or has dumped it entirely. Essentially it's no longer viewed as providing sufficent 'VfM' to justify its continued use over any other platform. Whilst FCPX may have teething issues it delivers better VfM than Avid...

Good point smile.gif Also, FCPX doesn't require any dedicated hardware and can run on portable machines just as well as workstations (as long as they sport an apple logo of course) so folks in the field can use it just the same as guys in the edit suite. Also, it's training wheel simple for folks who've never edited before. Also, as you mentioned it's DIRT CHEEP compared to Avid, which is why so many universities adopted it even when FCPX was just horrible. They keep adding pro features in each update thank goodness. It will eventually be a valid replacement for FCP7 it seems. That is, if everyone hasn't switched to premiere by then.

However, premiere is now a "rental" product only. You can't actually buy the newest versions as it's all subscription based. This is gonna play hell with university billing as I used to work at one and they didn't like subscription software of any kind. So things will have to shake out a bit.
