I started out using all four fingers, I have friends that didnt and wished they would have.
Dont misunderstand me, there are good reasons for stretching the ring instead of using the pinky.
Many licks can be played easier that way and using three fingers when playing high on the fretboard
can help if you have fat fingers! These are my exceptions though and not universal to everyone.
For beginning players, I would suggest following this general fingering guideline:
One finger per each fret (4). The position is defined by the fret the index finger is on.
The index finger can stretch one fret towards the nut.
The pinky finger can stretch one fret towards the bridge.
This is a total span of six frets.
If you use the above guidelines in playing scales, you will find it easier to "flow"
from scale to scale (diatonic > pentatonic > arppegio).
Learn to use your pinky now. It is a huge advantage. It will be hard to add it later,
but relatively easy to learn to play without it.
