Let's continue our work with box/pent shapes and add some open string bits in! This lick uses a strike on the open string and then two hammer ons per string. The main idea is just to add open string notes to a box/pent shape here, so picking is up to the player. Pick it all, pick some, whatever works. Just make sure to hit the open strings and mute enough to where there is not a lot of extra string noise.
Once you get this type of approach down pat, it can be applied to any shape/scale/key. Of course, using the key of E and scales in E works well. Working on the second octave up, near 12th fret, and using the 3 fretted E root notes that happen at the second octave comes in handy. (12th fret E string, 14th fret D string, 12th fret high E string, in addition to the open low E and open High E.)

*Tablature shows ascending part.
See if you can reverse it and do the descending bit without tab.
It's the same idea, just descending per the vid.
