The Shure SM57 is possibly the most popular dynamic instrument mic ever. It's used a lot and it's also recommend to people routinely. Hi Tony, I was trying to buy a dynamic mic for vocals to record live sessions. I have been using condenser mic but realized the acoustic guitar spilled over to the vocals so cannot actually manipulate the recorded guitar sound as the mic sound has higher level of guitar sound. Which mic do you recommend? I have been seeing comparisons and review videos and while SM58 seems a popular choice for vocals instead of SM57, I found it was a bit "damp", "bassy". Please suggest a great dynamic mic. I have a band and been recording live acoustic sessions. Thanks, Chandra What budget do you have Chandra? Personally I'd prefer a good condenser over a dynamic for acoustic guitar and vocals. When you're recording both vocal and acoustic you need to take a lot of care over positioning and mic angle to both reduce spill and account for prximity and other issues. Personally I'd focus on getting the vocals right as that tends to be the focal track and some of the guitar tonal balance may welll be attenuated or pass filtered out anyway. If you use a good fig.- 8 condensor like a Neuman u87 (an AKG C414 is an alternative but there are other, cheaoer options like an AT4050) then with good positioning you can control a lot of the spill. HAvng said a figure-8 you can get good results with other patterns including omnis. If you have more than one mix you can also experiment with mic techniques based on near coincident like ORTF and mid-side. Spending time with position and anglethough is really important and these can change depending on the room size, relfections, acoutic guitar used, vocalist... For recording the band withi minimal micing - I think a stereo pair of condensers in ORTF would be a good starting point. -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. Hi Chandra,
If you use a figure of 8 pattern condenser you can then position the mic so that the null/dead spot is pointed at the guitar. That way the mic will reject as much of the guitar signal as possible so you'll get less spill. It may also help to have the mic slightly above the vocalist's mouth and angled. The mic doesn't have to be a U87 as any figure of 8 pattern condenser can do this. The U87 does have very good rejection but will be expensive. As far as I know I don't think your3035 mic has a fig. 8 pattern but you can still get some rejection with its cardioid pattern by again pointing the null towards the guitar. That should be the rear of the mic. So you need to angle the mic so the rear points more down towards the guitar and the front is towards the vocalist's mouth. If you're close micing the vocalis you'll also need to use a pop shield with that mic. Also, just to reduce spill you can also try experiment with putting some sort of baffle between the mic and the guitar. -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. WOW the U87 is definitely very expensive mic. The AKG seems to have been discontinued (not available at musiciansfriend). Which one do you recommend as a fig 8 mic? around $500?

Well I never said the Neumann would be cheap .
Around $500 a couple of condensers with figure8 that are worth a look: SE Electronics SE2200A Audix CX212B Don't forget that you can get some rejection with your cardioid though Chandra if you angle it. The Rode should be fine for the money as well Chandra. I didn't know it did fig-8 (thought the older version NT2 was omni and cardioid so looks like they might have upped the specs on it).
This might not be practical where you are but if you can try the mics out as which one is right for you is really dependent on your voice. One other thing to try if you can is putting a baffle/screen between the guitar and the mic.
