Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Chord Strumming by Darius Wave

Thanks Monica for the great support for helping me achieve this lesson. Although still not perfect, I feel I made a nice progress! Look forward to some feedback and grades...

Hi Gert!

It's always a pleasure for me to work with you. I will not write a very detailed feedback, since we've worked together on this lesson for quite some time,

I like the fact that you fixed some of the things that we talked about regarding timing (even if there are some spots where you still hurry), muted notes ("X"), etc

For me, the most important issue in your take still remains the precision of strumming. When you play the cords A minor, D major, C major, we can hear and see you hitting those strings that should not ring. Unfortunately, this affects your overall performance.
Even when you hit an additional string that fits into the chord, it is not correct because the lower string frequency totally changes the flavor of the chord. That's why this lesson can be very tricky.
You know, because "avoid to strum" solution doesn't work yet for you, maybe it's time to train yourself to use your left thumb and index finger tip, to softly touch the strings that you don't want to hear in the mix.
Anyway, don't worry, time and practice will solve all the problems.

Other things that you can focus on are the accents and a better clarity on the barre chords.

You did a good job and I’m very proud of you! You get a 7 from me.

Keep up your great work!

Very nice Gert, overall this is very promising!

As Monica said, you apply a 'generic' strumming movement to all chords, regardless of their root note etc. When playing the most common open chords (used in thousands of songs) those subtle nuances is what will make all the difference.

To help you work on this, I suggest you use the new Machine Tutor (red button in lessons) as it will only give you a grade if you accent the same notes as Darius. This will force you to hit the right bass notes (and also start thinking about variations on "the way back" - ie the upstrokes that focus more on the higher/thinner strings - thereby creating a melodic movement).

One important detail in order for you to clearly hear what is going on (and for the Machine Tutor to catch what you are playing) is to lower your gain / distortion setting. You should strive for a clean sound in this lesson.

Give the Machine Tutor a shot. When you improve your score - you will def be closer to Darius' playing.

Also worth noting, is that as soon as there is quick change between barre chords, your timing gets a little off. This is natural because there is simply more to think about when a new chord is coming up. However this is also an indication that you need to practice the chords changes more at a slower tempo.

All-in-all this is def a pass for a level 2 lesson - well done you get a 7 from me!

Keep up the amazing progress 😎👊
