Hi Nicolas,

Awesome you want to keep pushing your abilities further! 🤗

I suggest we start on a fresh page, and I would like you to share the following with me:

* Your favorite guitarists / bands

* Your long term goals (what do you dream of being able to play one day).

* What type of content/exercises you have worked on recently.

* A video which you think is somewhat representative of your current level of playing.

I understand you are interested in a jam based approach which is great, because that's what I personally love doing as well 👊

Hi Kris,

thanks for taking me in!

My favorite guitarists / bands:
- Clapton
- Matthew Bellamy
- Mark Knopfler
- B.B King
- Slash
- ...

Long term goal:
- Being able to play Eugene's Trickbag smile.gif
- Being able to really improvise, not just up/down pentatonic scale.

Currently I work on improving my understanding on improvisation with pentatonic scale first (question and answer, phrasing etc.)
I work also with this lesson on bending : https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginn...ending-Workout/

An improvisation that I played: https://soundcloud.com/nicolas-lefevre-1823...o/s-cTOOJVrLRdQ
And a video of "Muse goes stoner": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yogK1BZZXn4

Yes I interested in a jam based approach for sure.

Thanks Nico,

Your improv is nice and there are no obvious issues: your timing, intonation and flow is good 😎

Since improvisation is a huuge topic - I find the trickiest part is where to start.

Since you also have a clear goal of improving your technqiue / playing Eugene's Trickbag - I am thinking that we should start with looking at some technique challenges/practicing, and possibly identify some issues that might be holding you back.

After that, we could look at how to involve technique practicing into a jam based practicing routine.

-----

An alternative route, is to not work so much on chops / speed but rather search for 'low hanging' fruit in your improvs. Basically that would mean identifying concepts you can apply to improve your jams asap. Which is what we did here:
https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/guitar_fo...showtopic=62795

-----

We cannot really do both at the same time. So my suggestion is to start with whichever you feel would be most inspiring.

Please let me know what your spontaneous thoughts on this is?

The first option sounds good for me, trying to improve my technique and involve into a jam based practicing routine.

Currently I do this routine (since yesterday smile.gif
- warming up with lian: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Warming-up-with-Lian/ 80 > 140
- little finger work-out: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/solo-guit...inger-work-out/
- bending: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Beginn...ending-Workout/
- alternate picking: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Altern...cking-Workout-4
- rock rhythm variations: https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Rock-Rhythm-Variations/

For the improvisation part, I tried to have a better understanding of the guitar neck like identifying the intervals for the pentatonic.

What do you think?

Very nice blends of lessons Nico!

You cover a wide range of topics, and best of all - they are chosen based on your personal preferences. This is totally superior to someone else deciding for you what to practice 👌

Yes this is a good strategy if your current priority is fretboard visualisation / position shifting.

----

Since you are off to a great start here, I would like you to send me the following:

* After aprox a week of practice, record a video featuring both

1] your top speed (choose any of your current lessons/exercises)

2] and also a speed at which you are in total control and completely relaxed

Nb 2 will be the speed at which you can truly improvise. Nb 1 will be your muscle memory speed which you can use for buildups etc when jamming.

Let me know if it makes sense!

Very nice Nico,

For most part you are doing good here.

There are some moments in Little finger workout where you fluctuate in tempo.
In Alternate picking workout #4 you could minimise you hand movement further for speed.

Your jam is also cool like I expected from your previous sample links. You also follow the chord progression neatly. The obvious improvement area here is vibrato, which would take you to a whole new level and make your jam much more enjoyable to listen to.

----

Since you are doing such a good job right now, working intensely on many different lessons - I don't really want to stop your flow.

However I would like to give you a challenge:

What if you tried to include the pattern in "Little finger workout" in a jam? (it's call pedal note btw)

It does not have to be a fast jam at all, but it would be very interesting to see you go in and out of this pattern when jamming. This would likely also open up doors to more diatonic phrasing (relying less on pentatonics).

This challenge will not be easy but likely very rewarding.

Looking forward to hear what you think!

Thanks for your feedback Kris,

I tried to put the pattern "Little finger workout" in a jam but yeah, it's not easy (for me), it's like it doesn't sound right.
I tried with the minor scale like the lesson but, I have to work on it..

wow, thank you kris for your really detailed feedback.
Really great, I didn't expect that. I think I understood much better for the vibrato and also for the "pedal note" technique.
All that remains is to practice again and again smile.gif

I will try to apply your recommendations concerning the vibrato on the lesson "Beginner solo in D"

Hi Kris,
I still continue to practice every day. I didn't post the previous week because of lack of time (yes for me to register a video can take me a lot of time smile.gif ).

I could register two videos this time:

- Little finger workout 80BPM :

- Beginner Bending Workout

This last one seems easy but no smile.gif

I also register this one https://www.guitarmasterclass.net/ls/Warming-up-with-Lian/ but I think I deleted the video file. And for the improvisation, I will send you a video in the week too, I also worked on the exercise you suggested.

Very nice Nico!

- Little finger workout:

We can see you are capable of being in full control here. However the tempo is still a little challenging here so we can see some places where you loose timing and hand sync.

Considering this, and the fact that you are working on implementing this into your jamming - I would def advise you to practice at a slower tempo here. Before you can really expect to use this in a jamming situation - you need to be able to play it in full control while being totally relaxed.

The good news is that you are there to 90% - I think you are just pushing speed a little too much here.

- Beginner Bending Workout

Yet again you display control and even nail those bends with the pinky - well done! It is also clear your ears know when the right pitch is reached.

There is a bit of inconsistency though, and sometimes you miss the pitch. However this is perfectly normal. From my perspective you could move on from this lesson - as you will keep polishing your bends using pretty much any other lead lesson.

Keep up the hard work! 👊
