Alternate Picking "cheating" |

My picking range is so small that my downstroke on the 6th string still ends well above the 5th string, so moving my hand down even more just to do an upstroke seems almost counterproductive and very unnatural for me... I can do it when thinking hard about it, but if I put my attention to something else, like trying to alt pick 16th notes to a metronome, I can't seem to pick up down (6th) up down (5th) So, is this actually cheating? And if it is, I'm guessing it's something I should fix ASAP, or perhaps it's not that big of an issue, if I can still keep timing?
