Have you heard of GAIN STACKING? Using an OVERDRIVE pedal and a DISTORTION pedal stacked together? It's more common than you might think. Most folks tend to use one or the other. They are missing out on a huge variety of tone. This doesn't require two actual pedals. For folks using a mutl fx unit, you can just pick an overdrive and a distortion and use them in the same patch. Depending on how you set the controls, you can get a huge tone that still is very articulate and not fizzy or so blurry with gain that you can't make out the notes. Check out this video.

QUESTION: WHO STACKS OVERDRIVE / DISTORTION PEDALS IN THEIR RIG/PATCHES?

Isn't stacking a distortion pedal with an overdrive pedal, essentially the same thing as using an overdrive pedal on your amp's dirty channel?

Yup. It's pretty much the same. It's just like doing it but with the gain stage in your amp inside one of the pedals. You'd probably use it going in to a clean channel. Doing it this way you get the tone of the edals you choose.
