Losing Music Taste

Hi guys, i have an issue which i've had for quite a while. I'm finding that i'm not enjoying the bands that i used to love to listen to anymore because it just isn't inspiring for playing guitar and stuff. I want to listen to stuff that inspires me to play but i'm just not getting that anymore. A lot of what i used to listen to wasn't what you'd call great guitar playing and i'd like to get into stuff that i enjoy listening to know because i guess what i like has changed. Has anyone else ever found that before?

For me most modern day rock bands are a big no no. There are a few exceptions but most of them i don't enjoy listening to. Some bands/musicians that do expire me include

Dream Theater
Gary Moore
Eric Johnson
Van Halen
Tool
Opeth
Porcupine Tree
Arch Enemy
Steve Vai
Paradise Lost (recent albums for the atmosphere they put into their tracks)

As you can see not a very big list there. That's all i have to go for, and also a lot of stuff on GMC inspires me like Kris, Marcus L and Muris' stuff inspires me a lot. I do like other stuff as well but you know i might find the odd song by a band that i find really inspiring but i won't have that for all their stuff so i can't really count that. Bands that i used to really like but have since been turned off from them are:

In Flames
A7X
Soilwork
Nightwish
Rammstein
Scar Symmetry
Killswitch Engage
Dragonforce
Disturbed
Atreyu
And so many modern day rock bands that would be too numerous to name

So does that mean that i'm a full blown metalhead now that i can't stand to listen to rock anymore? I don't think so because A, i still like to listen to bands like Van Halen, Toto, Genesis, bit of ACDC now and again etc. And also i'm a sucker for a good ballad.

When i feel i'm good neough as a guitar player i also definitaly wouldn't say no to being in an original rock band. But i know that i wouldn't be happy playing what modern rock bands are doing. Why don't i like it? It's odd. I would have to take the style and make it my own i think or bring back elements of 80s hard rock/classic rock. Maybe i'm missing the guitar solos and thinking about it this could be the big issue here, there's nothing lead guitar wise that i find at all inspiring. Sure you may hear the odd solo now and then in a rock band these days but nothing has blown me away like the time i hear Van Halen play for example.

I obviously like more bands than i listed above but those are the artists that inspire me on guitar. I like a lot of music but i can listen to it and enjoy it but it doesn't necessarily inspire me to play something similar or to you know play that style or even learn that song. Anyone have a similar experience before?

Think of music taste like fashion, it changes from time to time, and it's perfectly natural to suddenly find yourself not liking music you used to love.

It's also a sign that you are evolving as a musician, and you want to explore other areas of music to put espects of in you'r own playing, and that's always good, you'r on your way of creating you'r own unique playing style smile.gif

Don't worry too much mate, as you discover new music some of the old bands you like might become a bit boring sometimes... it happens.

Don't know if it's similar but my taste runs in periods. During the 80's I was a metal head and didn't listen to anything but 80's hard rock and heavy metal. That part of my taste will surely never go away, I love to listen to many of these bands - just not every day. Right now I'm in a blues and vintage rock period, stuff like Cream got me hooked. We played their songs for like 10 years in my band but it's only now (or the last couple years) I've started to pay attention to what it really is and actually how teriffic it is.

There's been a fair share of Hendrix and Led Zeppelin too, but not today. It's been quite a while since I listened to and enjoyed them. Lately, as I said, Cream and a few others like Robert Palmer, Foghat and such + progressive metal like DT and Sun Caged are favourites right now.

Who knows, in a year from now I could be back with Led Zeppelin. Who knows? I think it's in parallell with what I'm developing in my own style. Take Cream for example, simple to play, but when you listen to the details and try to nail off of it there's another dimension to their music. That's what I'm anjoying, to listen to what they are actually doing and trying to find their technique.

So my point being that I'm sure I will always enjoy the vintage rock, 80s metal and progressive rock. Only at different times in my life. I hope to pick up on Jazz and other styles in the future. There's so much great music out there, and a lot of crap too that I belive I'll never like. But finding out what's good for me today, at this moment. Than can be a task in it's own. dry.gif

Eric Clapton is my all time favorite guitarist, and will always be.

But, now I don't listen to him hardly anymore, I guess I got a little tired of it, doesn't mean I don't like him anymore.

But, 2 years ago if someone would have said to me, "in 2 years you will barely listen to clapton at all" I would have laughed.

but these days, I mainly listen to alot of Eric Johnson, Guthrie Govan, Paul Gilbert etc.

Well, It's Deeproots fault I listen to PG *cough* Metal dog vid *cough*

I have also lost taste in some music, but I'm not sure if it was my music taste maturing or just evolving. I have also gone through cycles of music such as metal, 80s rock, Journey, ect., I think its a natural part of life.

Yeah i guess this has taken me by surprise a bit. It's definitaly become difficult listening to music nowadays. I want to explore other bands/artists but i'm a bit confused exactly what kind of music i really like so i'm not sure where to look. A while ago i did try neoclassical and other styles i hadn't really heard before i think now is the time to give it another shot i think.

Oh and Slammer i'd see a doctor about those coughs mate biggrin.gif

Try another approach maybe, pick a guitarist that you like and take a stoll down his (for the most part a "he") career.

The only solution to this, I've found, is to listen to everything. Thats what I do nowadays, I can find inspiration in most stuff I listen to. I think the problem comes when you limit yourself to a certain genre, no matter what you do you'll eventually find inspiration in something else. Maybe you're a complete metalhead, but then you realize you really love jazz and get inspired by it. I think its a possibility that that will happen to you for every kind of music. So if you're limited in what you're listening to, there are always times when you'll see how good other stuff is and it might confuse you, because you're "home genre" (metal if you're a metalhead for example) is no longer better than everything else.

Just my thoughts.
