Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: John Mayer Crossroads Licks by Gabriel Leopardi

Hey guys, been working a bit on this great lesson from Gabriel. I'm not really a huge student of SRV or John Mayer's music but I am a big fan. I know there is some sloppiness here. Like where I don't really strum through the sixths towards the end and miss the high E string. I don't think I even place the two notes of the ending A properly. I'm sure there's more but thanks for listening and checking it out.

Hi Bruce!

Great to see a new recording from you. This is a very promising take.

In order to improve your playing, it would be awesome if you would pay more attention to the expressive elements: dynamics, accents, different types of bends, the length of the notes, etc.
Taking care of these details, you will remove the "squareness" from your playing.

Bending - you need to get better at hitting the correct pitch. Unfortunately, you have some bends which don't sound so good (a few are under the right pitch but at 0:27 is the first one where you are over the right pitch).

Raking - apart from 0:29 where you do a kind of raking, you skipped this technique from your playing. Using this tool, you will add a little spice to your playing.

0:06 - 0:08 - these notes don't sound clear enough.

0:10 - to make these double stops sound better, you really should play them with a little more force. Put accents on them and also, for a much more "cool effect", you can vibrate the third double stop as Gab shows in the slow video. This will give the perfect flavor for the double stop.

0:16 - here you should play just the A note (E string) with a vibrato. In your take you overlap the A note with the E note/B string.

0:35 - on this spot you add one more note. Before the bends, we should hear only two notes played (F# and A).

I'm sure you can fix all the things that I pointed out. You get a 6 from me.

Keep up your awesome work!

Very cool man 😎

While it's true there is opportunity to clean some parts up as you say, playing sloppy isn't necessarily a problem for this kind of solo.

What really matters in the end, is what Monica is describing. And we see plenty of evidence you already understand this.

So what do we need to see from you in on order for you to level up? Consistency.

We need you to play all sections like the best ones here - because there is some great feeling already.

How can this be achieved?

I recommend you consider all the details Monica gave you when practicing. Then when recording / performing - you forget about everything and just rock away.

Sounds like hocus-pocus I know, but if you manage to pull this off I expect we will see amazing stuff coming from you.

Well done, you get a 7 from me!

Hello Bruce!

Good to see you playing this solo. From my own experience, I can say that it's much more difficult to play than it seems.

I think you do it very well. What you still need to work on are the details of execution such as the duration of the notes, articulation, and precision in bending. Also, you can put more emphasis on the width of the vibrato and the intensity with which you play with the pick.
One of the most important things we need to do to achieve the SRV sound is to strike the strings with exaggerated intensity. SRV attacked the strings in a very aggressive way and maybe this is a good solo and a good exercise to train this resource.

You've honestly done a pretty good job so far, but I think you can get more out of this lesson and work on small details.

Cheers
