Okay, so I'm trying to record with the audacity, and I have the backing trackon the first track and I'm recording my pplaying on the second... okay, then I start to record with the backing track in the background so I can keep up the rhythm, so foar so good... Then when I'm finished with the recording my playing and the backing track are way off, the guitar starts later, whats up with that, and how do I fix it????

Cheers smile.gif

What you;ve experienced is latency. It is the time that your sound card and proc needs to complete the AD/DA conversion and do some calculations and it is mesaured in ms. Just move the file a little to sync it with the backing and it should be OK. smile.gif

some times the syncro between each track there is a miliseconds or ticks so you can drop the track what you played
and never drop the backing track if you have played many tracks

Yeah, I found some forum while I was searching for the web for information and there was a step by step guide on how to do this with audacity, so I did and now there is no problem smile.gif Cheers smile.gif

I'm just going to revive this thread and ask another question

Is this problem common when you record?

Like when our fine instructors here record, do they always compensate for the latency?

Also is there a way to get my computer to tell me what the latency is?

Or do I have to do this experimentally?

furthermore... If I find the latency to be 25ms Is it safe to awesome that will always be the latency, or does it vary significantly depending on how my computer is doing?

Latency above a given threshold is always an issue - however it can be compensated for and below a given threshold (somewhat subjective but for many about 20ms or more) is not really an issue.

Most of the recent major sequencers offer a form of delay compensation that will generally deal with latency issues.

Similarly most will tell you what the latency of your system is - albeit the figure is a 'ball park' one rather than 100% accurate as it's based on an estimated latency related to your audio i/o path, see below. There are also a number of software plugs that can provide a more accurate measure of latency.

Yes latency can depend on what your pc is doing - it isn't just a sum of the audio ad/da io but also includes latency induced by transfer across the pc buss. Heavy video traffic across the buss, for instance, is notorious for inducing latency in to an audio stream.

Cheers,
Tony

ps apologies Kyldeee - missed your OP
