Legato Epiphony, trick to mastering Pavel's horizontal legato lesson Options

After months of practicing nothing but alternate picking, and getting to a point where I felt really good about it, I decided its time to move on to a new technique. A natural next step I thought would be legato. I decided to start practicing Pavel's horizontal legato lesson. About a week in to it, I kept noticing I was very sloppy on shifts, and it just didn't flow as smooth as in the video. At first I dismissed it as simply not enough practice, and that my fingers weren't strong enough. The thing is, practicing all those alternate picking runs really did build up my finger strength. So I started to wonder. Last night, after watching the video for the umpteenth time, it hit me. When I shift, I keep all three fingers on the fret board ready for the pull offs. BAD IDEA. Its almost impossible to shift from a closed to an open position and maintain all fingers right behind their respective frets. Once I realized that, and corrected the mistake, by lifting all but the sliding finger, I'm now able to do the ascending run at about 90% Pavel's speed. The descending run is a bit slower (~80%) because I haven't practiced it as much as the ascending one. Within a week, I believe I will master that lesson and will be able to move on to others.

Just thought I'd share the info in case there are others struggling with this technique. Also, as Pavel said previously, legato, despite its looks, is a very difficult technique. So make sure you take it slow. Don't get frustrated. Keep at it and use the metronome.

When playing Alternate Picking you use different muscles so strength in legato and AP is not quite the same! But basically you got it right! You must make each note stand for itself when playing legato - each note is an independent finger hit!
