Fluorescent light bulbs are pretty cool, though a bit expensive. However, in the long run, they can prove more cheaper then halogen lights, plus they don't generate heat so umbrellas and other strob-based reflectors can be used (they are cheaper).
Here's an example of one 50$ 100W bulb, which is around the same brightness as tungsteen 400W  Connecting them to a line or circle based array is interesting idea as well, and can be a cool DIY project
