So what do you think about this guy? Jani Liimatainen from Finland, his influences include Pantera and dream theater. He's a former Sonata Arctica member and was one of the founders. I think he now plays in a Finnish band called Sydänpuu(Hearttree).

Edit. Oh yeah and they say hes pretty much self taught

Double edit. Just found this vid Jani vs Syu

Jani has been a favorite of mine for many years, I was so sad when i heard he left Sonata Arctica, his sense of melody is unparalled, and his technique is perfect!!

I actually tried to search on the matter and I could not find a clear stating why but, I got the picture something like this:
In Finland military service is mandatory, if you don't wanna go to military service you can go to civil service and if you refuse to go to any of those you go to jail for I think 6 months... So if I understood correctly Jani went to do his Civil service but, bailed out in the middle of it and was ordered to be arrested... And some say the band couldn't deal with that and kicked him out... unsure.gif
This is just the picture I have got, so if someone knows for sure then please correct me.... wink.gif

Tell me about it, jeez... It sounds ridiculous. In Finland a lot of people think pretty negative about people who go to civil service or even jail, especially older people here feel pretty passionate about military service, they tend to call the people who don't go to military sissy homos who have no spine at all. And that makes me mad mad.gif because I have my own opinions on that matter and will choose between civil service and jail... cool.gif

I think that they kicked him out because Jani couldn't come to gigs and play live because all of this hassle that he needed to finish the civil service or military (which if I am correct was his own fault because he had delayed it for so long) and they needed to continue touring/gigging so they had to get someone to play guitar

I don't know if this is true but the picture that I got was something like this

Yeah i can understand that.

In a way im also glad he is doing his own thing now, i believe he still does his side project, Altaria i think it is.

On the latest Sonata Arctica album, Unia, i was very disappointed with the guitar work, there was a lack of general melody and solos compared to the other SA albums.
