Friday, September 7, was the day we were suppose to see Nightwish and Sonata Arctica play at Harpos. We had everything planned out, but in the end... no one wanted to drive in Southside of Detroit for scary getting stabbed, robbed, stolen a car reasons. While I was contemplating that day on what to do, I went to myspace by accident and saw Sauron posted a bulletin of a concert happening 20 min away from my house. Needless to say, we were jacked up to see a concert I will never ever forget. It was Radio Apocalypse, WHFR's Monday Night Death Metal show from 666-9 Whfr.fm, 10th anniversary of playing brutal music and providing local Metal acts for some air time. They held a concert with 2 of there fav bands and also friends Nunslaughter and Sauron with supporting act which were equally good Anguish and Nocturnal Fear.
The venue was at Simons Bar in Allen Park. Small bar as all hell, but the atmosphere was incredible. Very very exclusive show. When we enter, I think me and my friend was the only one not wearing patched up denim jackets. The show felt like it was strictly for Metalheads and Crust Punks. Bullet Belts, bands hanging out in the bar, beer, Metal music and very cheap merch boot... man could a venue get any better? The best thing about this is that, everyone thats gonna be playing at the show, were hanging out on the floor as well. So we got to meet the guys from Sauron, my favorite thrash band, and talked to them. First up on the bill was Nocturnal Fear. Death/Thrash band hailing from the depths of Detroit. Put on a good show to get the crowd moving. The guitarist was blazing up some mean solos and awesome riffage. The music was brutal and fast... just the way we all like it. Next up are these Crusty guys Anguish. First song these guys did was some moshing madness. The main gig was the size of my room and yet people still found a way to mosh on the tightest place. Most of the crowd were Punk doods, lotta headbanging notion going on. These guys are FAST AND ANGRY. A deadly combination when all you see in the room are bullet belts punks and metal (no fighting though, everyone got a long great). The best band in Detroit at the moment, Black/Thrashers ala Sarcofago--- Sauron. We moved in on the front with our friends from WHFR, Jugular Joe, and started talking to Victor, guitarist for Sauron. I was yelling out "Bonded By Blood" as a request, but sadly they didn't play it. When they started playing though, it was a headbanging kind of music. EVERYONE was headbanging, long hair, short hair, you best believe everyone was thrashing there brain. It was a killer show. We were conversing with the band after they play songs, yelling out "I'm F Deaf" and there like YEAHHHHHHH!!!!! then start playing again. Its nice knowing a band and getting to know them personally. The last song they played Thrash Attack and Victor broke his e string at the beginning of the song. Bummer, but he continued thrashing as all hell. At the end of the show he told me "Yeah, if you didn't break your strings while playing thrash, your not playing fast enough hahaha!" So very true haha. The band of the night, Ohio's best band Nunslaughter. Blackened Death Thrashers Nunslaughter. Such precise mastery of brutality and blasphemy these guys possess. If it wasn't for the headbanging we did on Sauron, we would have jumped in the pits these guys summoned from HELL. Every time they end the songs, the drummer held up his drum sticks in an upside down cross notion. VERY BRUTAL is all I could say about this band. Some bands claim to be brutal, but these guys walk the walk. I have never been freaked out in a concert in my life till I saw these guys blasphemous ways. So yes, this was the best show for me. Something that I will never forget. Some people going to big festivals of metal bands, but for me, small clubs are the way to go for the best metal concerts. Getting to know bands, drinking beers, pictures, and thrashing with the next up coming band. -------------------- |
