The key is a distorted sound with lots of attack. If you just slap on a standard hi-gain distortion stomp box you usually even out all the dynamics, and you won't be able to get this effect. You need an initial volume peak, in the attack part of the sound. I get this by using the Kemper's built-in control for "pick" volume. It needs to be a fairly configurable one - so that you can set the attack time to ~20-50 ms . Basically what will happen is that the compressor will "pull down" the volume after the attack time, so the beginning of each note will be perceived as louder. There is another player that reminds me a bunch of this guy, DOUG ALDRICH who has gotta be one of the most under rate players ever The guy is just a badass. His playing is so natural and fluid. For some reason I HATED stryper in my youth. These days I really appreciate them and their contribution. And yeah, he still has the pipes at 53!!! It's impressive. Clean living eh? Rob Halford's voice on the other hand, as well as Dave Mustaine's has suffered steady decline due to previous driinking and drug abuse. Stryper are the poster boys for clean living and they are one of the few acts from the 80s that don't look like they are 100 years old.
