Well.. So I want laptop, that can record music (2 GBs of ram and more) dual core processor, a GPU that will do for some occasional gaming (Wow, UT3, Endwar...) and either 17'' or 13.3'' (just not 15:))

AND

I am a DESIGNAHOLIC. The laptop has just to look decent. No fancy pictures, no fancy colors. I totally love Apples design. Its just smooth, clean and clear..

Why not mac then? Well.. in our stupid country, macs are 50% more expensive than in USA and I am afraid of warranties from us.. and also from shipping and VAT..

Say, if you have any idea where to look.. I've been digging high and low, and still cant find anythink, that I would like in terms of look.. and when I find something (Voodoo envy 133) it has pitiful hardware specs (single core processor, integrated GPU etc..)

edit: It should be as well silent and not too overheating..

I like thinkpads. They're not as shiny as an ibook but they are real work horses.

I think HP has a great laptop line. I use it and I am very happy. The only thing I don't like is Vista. This model costs $1299. There are more expensive ones but I don't think you get much more. Sony Vaio has the same configuration but it is way more expensive just because it is Sony. You can spend the rest of the money for some external soundcard if you want to record.

This is the link.

Yes you can reinstall the system. You will then lose your guaranties because you'd need to format the hard drive. Normal downgrade from Vista to XP is not possible or at least I haven't heard that it can be done. You can of course do it yourself if you format the hard drive and start from scratch. You need full CD with serial number as the sticker from the laptop will be useless after you format your drive.

So you lose guaranties if you do it by yourself but it can work,
thanks bro, just wanted to know that,
I'm also looking for a laptop and the one you have works pretty nicely. smile.gif

The system restore to the factory settings is stored on the hard drive (if you ever want to restore it to the state as it was when you first bought it). Obviously if you format the drive you can forget about that feature smile.gif

Dell, Lenovo and HP are more expensive but better quality than the cheaper brands like Acer or Fujitsu. When it comes to gaming I dunno what is best, but for normal use where you want stability and quality those 3 brands are my recommendations. HP looks best, Lenovo is probably best quality of the 3 smile.gif

And you can downgrade from Vista to XP at least in Sweden..

Emir: I guess I have a winner for a 17'' (or 18'' to be exact:) ) cathegory:) Any guess for the 13.3 one?

I am kinda unsure, if I want larger display (great for mixing, recording, EQing etc...) or better mobility (you cant open 18'' in airplane/bus/tram...).

Also is the HP on the quieter and cooler side? Or is it impossible to work with it on my legs, because of 3rd degree burns?biggrin.gif

Large screens is the least of anyones worry nowadays especially on laptops. Just get 13" one for easy portability, and if you need a bigger screen, then hook it up to a desktop screen using a VGA/DVI cable. Most laptops have such connections.

I open my HP laptop everywhere on the plain, train, not really on the bus as I wouldn't do a thing there in between many crazy people in London's buses:)

The thing with the temperature is a bit tricky. Depends how you position it. Sometimes gets hot, sometimes not. Don't really know how to explain. It has the open back and the bottom to force the heat out.

If you go for 13" screen I am not sure if you will get such graphic card and many built in options like many usb ports etc...

... i saw you are close to go for a PC, but here maybe some thoughts for the apple option smile.gif

Personally i would always go for apple .. design is one point, but main reason is OSX, which is just incredible nice to work with. Not to worry about Viruses or driver conflicts and all these things is another important point for me and well worth to pay a bit more. To switch to an apple is a bit depending how you are already equipped with software(?).

On the first view, Macs are maybe more expensive as PCs, but keep in mind that apple products guaranties a certain quality and start from there, which can not be compared to cheap PC manufactures.

I'm not so much aware of the prices of good PC laptops by now, but i suggest you to compare the specifications of each component between the PC and MacBook/MacBook Pro to get an idea how much more expensive an apple really is.

The online apple store has a refurbished section where you often can do a good deal of getting labtops.

On thing which is ridicules over-priced at apple is memory. In case you go for apple, take the standard setup and get your memory upgrade from something like crucial.com

TBH if you can afford it - and switching isn't an issue - I'd agree with WRK and go with an Apple. But that may not be possible so...

PC orientated - for a design statement type laptop which usually have good performance try the Sony Vaio series here. Not cheaper - although cheaper than a new Mac book. My wife and I use several Vaios - but then we get a hefty discount from Sony Europe - they have good screens, ok battery life, reasonably portable, etc. Main bug bear is that they come preloaded with a bit of Sony software.
