The pentatonic scale has got 5 notes.
for example: Em penta has the notes: E,G,A,B,D. It starts over after the 5 notes. E|------------------------ B|------------------------ G|------------------------ etc. D|-----------------12-14- A|---------12--14-------- E|-12-15----------------- E,G,A,B,D,E The major scale has got 7 notes. (You can also say that there are 8, but thats the octav) For example: E major: E, F#,G#,A,B,C#,D,E Major: |---------------------------------- |---------------------------------- |---------------------------------- |---------------------11-13-14--- |---------11-12-14--------------- |-12-14--------------------------- E,F#,G#,A,B,C#,D#,E Now when I have explained the major scale it?s easy to see the differences between the scales. E Minor: |-------------------------------------- |-------------------------------------- |-------------------------------------- |---------------------11-13-14------- |-------------12-14------------------- |-12-14-15--------------------------- E,F#,G,A,B,C#,D#,E You see that the only differences between major and minor is the 3 tone. In major the 3 note in the scale i 2 hole steps, (4 frets up) And in minor the 3 note is 1.5 steps. (3 frets up) Dorian. If you compare the dorian scale with the major scale, the differences are the 3 and the 7 note is a half step lower in dorian. E Dorian: |--------------------------------- |--------------------------------- |--------------------------------- |----------------------11-12-14- |-------------12-14-------------- |-12-14-15---------------------- E,F#,G,A,B,C#,D,E Ionian is the same scale as the Major scale. Here is a link that shows the Dorian scale. Under the picture to the left there are numbers that show you what the differences are between the Major scale and the Dorian. (Or another scale) The numbers on the Dorian scale: 1,2,b3,4,5,6,b7. The "b" means a half step down. http://www.all-guitar-chords.com/guitar_sc...an&get2=Get I hope this will help. *If there is some wrong stuff here please tell me. EDIT: In the major/Ionian scale all notes are hole step exept between the 3-4 and the 7-8 Major: 1 (hole) 2 (hole) 3 (half) 4 (hole) 5 (hole) 6 (hole) 7 (half) 8 Minor: 1 (hole) 2 (half) 3 (hole) 4 (hole) 5 (hole) 6 (hole) 7 (half) 8 Dorian: 1 (hole) 2 (half) 3 (hole) 4 (hole) 5 (hole) 6 (half 7) (hole) 8 (major: hole step from 1-2, hole step from 2-3, half step from 3-4, hole step from 4-5, hole step from 5-6 hole step from 6-7, half step from 7-8) This post has been edited by Norven: Jan 21 2007, 05:20 AM -------------------- The Guitar may be the love of life.
