I wouldn't expect to have many options when it comes to 8 string guitars.
But since you're in USA, Kiesel seems to be what you'd like; https://www.kieselguitars.com/catalog/guitars/dcm8 I'd advise contacting them, maybe they might offer you something closer to your price range. |

Keisel seems a little too high priced but I wonder if I was to buy that rgim8mh and later swap out for passives. I'm gonna see if that's possible.

Probably your most practical option at this point I tried one of the FANNED FRET 8 STRING guitars from Strictly 7 Guitars and I've tried the Fanned Fret 8 from Ibanez. Both felt different than the standard RG8 partially owing to the fanned fretting. Once you get used to it, it's fine, just takes a bit
Going from Active to Passive is a good switch to make in that axe IMHO, HOWEVER, unless you've already bought the pickups, I'd suggest something even simpler. Having your guitar "re routed" (hopefully you won't need to) isn't free, neither is having it rewired and new pots put in for passive. To avoid all of this and just ride the train in the direction it's heading while getting your PASSIVE PICKUP tone quality, I'd suggest the easiest plan of all. I can speak from experience as I've done this same thing. *BUY THE ONLY EMG PUPS THAT SOUND LIKE PASSIVES!!! These are "solderless" and I installed them in my Rusty Cooley 8 String and it made all the diferrence in the world. These are great sounding pickups that sound more like BKP than EMG imho. It took about 5 minutes. here is the Bridge. EMG 57-8 http://www.emgpickups.com/guitar/7-and-8-and-9-string.html this unique combination of Alnico V magnets and steel pole pieces evoke an unmistakably PAF quality in its tone, yet the active attributes provide the headroom and punch necessary to deliver unparalleled definition and presence. Designed and voiced specifically for the bridge position of your 8 string electric guitar (extended series cap 4 x 1.5 inch). The solderless installation makes this pickup easy to install at home. and the neck 66-8 http://www.emgpickups.com/guitar/7-and-8-a.../66-8.html#info Alnico V magnets provide a warm, smooth mid-range and expansive lows while the ceramic pole pieces balance out the clarity in the upper register. Designed and voiced as a neck pickup, the 66-8 is housed in an eight string extended series cap (4 x 1.5 inch). EMG's solderless installation makes changing your pickups easier than ever. ***Both of these pups have ALNICO mags in them instead of Ceramic, this creates a much more passive feel to them and gives them a wad of dynamics that are not there in your typical 88. I've tried this set and it breathes new life in to any instrument shackled with bad pickups. The RG8 has pickups made by CORT that are actually BASS GUITAR pickups. Uggh. You can find these EMG pups as a set and save a little cash. Also you can make the swap yourself. It's two screws and one push in cable. That's it. No luthier needed. Here is a pic after I put the 57-8 in my cooley 8 string. You can tell by the exposed pole pieces, which I thought looked cool as a bonus Was a very easy install. Took less time/effort than changing strings! Todd I think for now i'm gonna keep my current 8 and install some new pickups that are passive. I guess that's really the top thing I want. Though a new guitar would be cool one day. I'm thinking I'm gonna be getting the Seymour passives: Pegasus bridge paired with the Sentient Neck. I want more note separation and not so hot of pickups. From my research today, these as a set look and sound promising, when paired with their other options.

Hey Brandon! Hope things are good with you mate!!
You could try Agile Guitars! There's a Fanned Fret Passive 8 Stringer HERE There is a Non-tremolo version but it's loaded with Active 909's (EMG). -------------------- I'd rather have a full Bottle in front of me than a full Frontal Lobotomy!!

In that case have a look at THIS ONE!!!
Nope, you're right, you shouldn't need new pots and just disconnect the Battery hook-up! -------------------- I'd rather have a full Bottle in front of me than a full Frontal Lobotomy!!
