I thought it might be interesting to see what cover songs
GMC-ers are currently working on that are challenging them.
I got the idea because I have been struggling with Marty
Friedman's 0-7-2 and I'm frustrated at the moment and I'm
in need of a break dry.gif

From time to time, I learn Joe Satriani´s "If I could fly". That´s amazing! Yesterday, I started with Muris´s "Lydian Phrasng - Advanced". I didn´t know that I would learn it so fast. I only have to master it. smile.gif Then I´ll post a video here. biggrin.gif

That song is nuts, I can see why you're struggling.

I'm working on Blood and Thunder by Mastodon, I got most of it, but the bridge harmony part is killing me, I'm trying to figure it out all by ear, and I got something that sounds really close but isn't exact, and the second half of that bridge is totally escaping me right now. But I'll get it.

On a side note, I don't really learn songs for cover purposes, it's more like learning songs is my practice, it develops my ear, and because every song has a couple parts that are hard for me, I have to practice them to get that specific technique/lick down. And once I got the song down, I tend to forget it, but the technique I learned is still there, and I can make my own licks using techniques I learned and honed while learning the song, then I can morph them and twist them to make it original.
I'm saying this because I know some dudes who don't learn other people's songs because they think it will make them unable to be original somehow, witch really just backfires because if you don't know what others are playing, you don't know how NOT to play. And those guys usually end up being the least creative.

Sorry, I'm long winded when I'm tired.

I'm struggling with the Gargoyle (from Pauls latest album) and I must say that the major sweeps in there is a major trouble. Everything else I just need to practise a little but I managed to play it at 10 bpms less that original untill the sweeps. Then I'm stuck with da.... da..... da.... da.... da (you get it). THat blows so I'm taking a small time off from that song and focusing on my technique (sweeping) then I'm gonna go back... and rock the [poop] outta it biggrin.gif

This probably doesn't count - but I am currently struggling with an instrumental tune which I am doing with Marcus - and I am trying to learn to play properly a clean and slow melody passage with double stops and fingerpicking. That's not really my home territory so I am have a hard time recording it..!

I got halfway through the song and got bored hah, its too long. I am currently struggling with the symphony of destruction solo part. The fricking par wher he goes to 22 and starts doing legato type runs, urg mad.gif

Trond man you gotta post a video when you got it down, it's such an amazing song and the tone is godly! I transcribed and got down most of the first solo yesterday, biggest pain for me atm is getting a tone from my Spider 3 that is even remotely close to John's smooth lead tone from his Mark IIC+.

im learning alot of accoustic stuff and some of the tabs i have show very odd pickings and i can't do it.. right now i can strum all of Karma Police by Radio head but i just can't seem to play it the way the tab tells me but im happy with my version, the other song ive been struggling with alot lately is Trains by Porcupine Tree and Glassgow Kiss by John Petrucci smile.gif i don't mind a struggle tho, because it makes the victory so much sweeter smile.gif

I'm struggling with most songs I'm playing, but that's just me being a "beginner". (Played for almost 6 months, but hadn't had time to play at all the last 4 of them, so It's like, i'm still at the same point as I was in march/april)

But hey, school is up, and that makes a whole 9 months of practice-time.
