Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Beginner Palm Muting - Metal by Darius Wave

Hello everyone! When I saw this Darius class I realized that it would be optimal for me because I need to improve my accuracy. The truth is that seeing Darius playing this seemed easy enough but for me it is quite difficult! The most difficult for me is to make the breaks without any noise ... and anyway, I've been working this for a long time and I decided to record to receive your feedback and to be able to improve in the future! Thank you

NICELY DONE!!! You have a very high degree of control going on with your picking hand and you keep a good solid mute the entire time and don't let it drift until you lift for the purpose of letting the chords ring as they should. I"m sure Darious will have much more detailed bits to say on this as he wrote the piece. As someone just listening to it as a musical performance, I'm impressed both musically and technically. You have a very solid sense of timing, a very good use of dynamics, and you never seem to miss anything you are going for. The only thing that keeps it from being just about perfect for me is that you seem to be holding the reins just a pinch to tightly so that it's moving from precision in to being almost mechanical. It's a very fine balance to create. Playing with precision, yet letting a piece breath enough to sound organic. Still, I enjoyed it and you get a solid 7 from me!!

Girst of all when doing slides it is not 100% sure to be able to remove absolutely all the noise cause by finger moving across the string. If you listen carefulyl, you'll notice that my original take has some little noise as well but I use clearly lower gain amount so it's not being exposed as much. More gain form the hand and less on the amp/stomp is the key to find a best tone with minimum unwanted scratching or similar.

In general you have a tendency to rush (play in front of the beat). That usually is caused by improper playback conditions or simply hesitation while playing licks that are not already 100% loaded into fingers memory/muscle memory.

In the chorus part you could have a little more consistency in palm muting vs open proportion. Sometimes you release the muting too fast while there's a simple 50/50 rule here.

There's some kind of tuning issue here but I'm not able to clarify where's the source of it - fretting hand pressure or string itself. Maybe you are hitting soft when tuning and while playing hard, strings go up with the pitch.

Besides this I haven't spot any particualr mechincs issues. These are things to fix considering to make a professional studio take smile.gif

Anyway. Well done.

Hi Carlos,

I think that this is a good take and that your rhythm skills are getting better. At this point, it's time to work on details related to sound, dynamics, articulation and timing precision.

The sound element is related to guitar EQ, but also to your palm muting technique. I recommend you to experiment with different palm pressures and positions in order to get a more consistent palm muting tone. I think that the first part is the one that need more adjustment on it. Then, your palm muting sounds better.

Regarding dynamics, I would put some attention to Darius's accents when playing the different riffs. That will make your rhythm playing much more organic.

If you compare the original lesson with your take, and listen carefully to the first riff, you'll notice that there is some articulation that is missed in your take. By articulation I mean to the way that the notes are connected, how long or short is each note, the use of silence and staccato. This is a very expressive element and I think that it's missed in your take.

Finally, as Darius said, you tend to rush a bit your timing. Check it out!

Regards!

Sounds cool!

As a listener I reacted to your guitar level being slightly loud compared to the backing. If the reflects your monitoring situation (ie this is the same levels you are hearing when playing) then it might be part of the reason why you are slightly rushing things. ry turning the backing up.

Also Darius' tone feels much more organic, you might want to try turning down the distortion and experiment with having more right hand attack.

All in all I think this is good and you get a 7 from me!
