Metal.. Strings/ Gear, whats best for metal.. ideas anyone?

What strings would anyone recommend for playing metal, are there any like "unknown" string brands out there that rock but arn't mainstream (skull. etc)

also im looking for big distortion without losing tone, within an acceptable price, what pedals should we be looken at, im using some krank stuff that cost me a bundle and i love it works well for metal, but what else is out there?
