I don't listen to guitar-players anymore since most of them bores me. (except myself ofc. I always find a new mistake for every recording I do)
I rather listens to singers, sax-players, keyboard-players etc. since they tends to play more melodical than guitar-players. Anyway, I do listen to some musicians playing guitar like Hendrix, Gary Moore, Pat Metheny amongst others. Favourite solo? That will be Georgia performed live by John Scofield in Copenhagen 1983.

It's hard to pick a favorite as there are tons of awesome solos, but one that people may overlook is the Invincible solo by Muse.

Skip to about 4 minutes and the songs turns from ballad to blowing your face off with an awesome whammy solo.

Matt Bellamy - a man who understands the power and fragility of a guitar solo.

Might be heretical around here but these days I don't really listen to guitar bands much anymore. I'm looking for ways to blend guitar in with other instruments to create new layers and textures - morphing one sound into another.

Some interesting replies given the question and context, but as far as guitar solos go, my favorite solos are actually done by good guitarists and that pretty much means some degree of virtuosity is involved. I"m all for guys that play marimba too, but as for guitarists, I really appreciate Steve Vai (big shock I'm sure) and "For the Love of God" is really quite good. Emotive, Technical, listenable, just killer.

Canon Rock is my favorite solo. It was that song that inspired me to play guitar!

Slash tears it up on Nightrain, those solos are killer. Tornado of Souls had an awesome solo too, I'd say that's my favorite

I'm mostly a metalhead and shred addict, but my favorite guitar solo is Nils Lofgren's solo part in Neil Young's 'Speaking Out', on the 'Tonight's the Night' album. That solo is absolute beauty.
