Hi guys!

I'm doing a school project about music and sound. So I figured that the whole GMC community would be glad to help me out my posting their opinions (might be wrong tongue.gif )
I'm in charge of "music stereotypes" and would like to know a few things:
1. What are the stereotypes that you find most common in all styles?
example: I think that people believe that Metal guys have always long hair and piercings and tatoos)
2. Why do you think people make stereotypes about different styles?
3. Do you think there's any solution?
4. If there is, what would it be?

Just a few related questions, appreciate all the help smile.gif

Thanks
Filipe

People tend to generalize and symbolize things, and I guess this is one part of the answer why we have stereotypes. I'm not sociology and psychology expert so cannot really answer in depth and accurate, but I think when people see something often on one type of a show, like headbanging on metal concert, some will say, all metalheads are headbangers. This is of course not true, not all of them are, and this is mostly generalized view on metal because of the lack of information to create subjective world and opinion on the matter.

I would suggest trying to give an example that supports a stereotype, and an example that goes against a stereotype...
This may not be the best example but... 80's metal bands are all about big hair, makeup, and tight outfits (fill in blank name of band like this... Motley Crue, etc.), then list a metal band like (fill in the blank... Metallica, Etc.). Explain why Metallica brakes this stereotype (even though they all have long hair), where as Motley Crue enforces this stereotype.

This doesn't answer all of the questions, but it may be a good point to bring up.

I do love both bands though, so don't get me wrong wink.gif .
