Learning and playing their own version of it is fine.
Aping the guitar part on to the existing original track is what I don't get. Sorry, IMO that's not learning anything about music. Reading the Illiad is awesome. Making up your own story inspired by the Illiad is awesome. Hell, even just setting it in modern times is cool (though done to death). Re-writing it word for word, turning it in and calling it something that 'you' did - is not awesome. At least play the song with a live band ... or, record all the parts.
