Steve has one of the best tones I think I ever heard. This is partially due to the fact that he uses his fingers to play, which is interesting.
Heres a video of probably his most famous guitar solo from the song Firth of Fifth, written while he was in Genesis (the video isn't a Genesis performance, it's a more recent Steve Hackett solo show, with a few other famous Progressive musicians)

Thanks for bringing up the subject of Steve Hackett. I've spent the last couple of days re-listening to "Selling England by the Pound" after reading your post. I feel a more prolonged listen to Gabriel-era Genesis coming on! Thanks again.

It's good to know that there are other Hackett fans on this board too. Oh and don't forget the two albums he was on even after Gabriel left (Trick of the tail, and Wind and Wuthering) they're also amazing
