Here is where the magic happens: the REC board turns bedroom guitarists into real pros. Remember - it doesn't matter if you fail or pass, as long as you keep posting REC takes you will progress.

The entries will be graded by a number of instructors. After grading, members will be accredited with the appropriate points if they pass, and adjustments will be made to their REC level.
Passing grade is 6 or higher.

Original lesson: Alternate Picking Workout #2 by Darius Wave

New try. Sorry I messed up the volume a bit.

Hi mate! Great to find a REC take from you!

I think that this lesson is going on the right track but there are two things that need attention and that are related. I notice that your playing is not smooth enough along the whole lesson, and the problem become more important when using palm muting technique. There, I feel that your timing is not going tight with the backing so you need to put some more work on palm muting alternate picking sections.

I tried to find out what could be the reason, and I think that maybe your right hand movement could be adjusted. It seems that you are doing some extra "rotation" movement with your hand, and the hand looks like "jumping". Please check your right hand at the video, and compare it with Darius hand. I think that you'll note what I mean, and I feel that this could be the reason why your take is having some timing issues.

Nothing else, let's continue working at the mentoring program!

Cheers,

Hey there!

Nice to see you working on my lesson. I generally agree with Gabriel on the timing-thing yet I'm not sure about the width of your wrist rotation. It's medium tempo. I usually advice to match the width of your motion to match the tempo the way you won't need to stop or speed up your hand. Consistent movement is a key to good timing. Second thing is the way to hold a pick. You need to experiment with your pick angles because I have a feeling this could be the reason - maybe you are simply holding the pick too hard. If it has no headroom for amortization, then it can stuck just a little between strings and cause a "latency" on particular pick strokes.

Your info about the volume - well not so bad at all wink.gif Could be a little louder but it's enouhg loud to capture some important details.

Unfortunately there are wrong notes in this take:
- at 0:01 - you play f# on 5th string while there should be f. It's a regular major (you made it lydian)
- at 0:22 - when you repeat g-major scale another two times, you should play g note on the d string twice, instead of going back to f# like with first two runs on this scale
- at 0:30 - wrong note order - e to d# - compare to original tab/lesson
- at 0:42 - D-major, not D-minor. You play f instead of f# on A string
- at 0:45 - the same mistake - minor instead of major - eb instead of e (originally this run is over C-major chord, not C-minor)

at 0:54 when you start the third part it's good that you kept playing it with reversed picking like in the original.

From a hands mechanics point of view your on the good path. I would suggest to try to experiment with just a little higher tempo. This tempo is at specific edge where you can actually still "jump" between strings. Trying to make additional practise by playing this tune in a higher tempo, can make your right hand get some new habits and shaping, that will work for higher speed in general.

Cool to see another attempt at this one!

Gab is describing the "unevenness" we have seen in your previous takes. However to me, it looks like you might have addresses this problem a bit with this take - so well done there.

Since this lesson is mostly about technique I will give you a 6 (you got a 5 last time). Tuning and vibrato is also slightly improved but still not to the point where it's truly enjoyable.

With the pace of progress you will get there quite soon though - just keep at it! cool.gif
