If you have a studio that uses hardware a couple of the issues that you face is getting everything connected and keeping all the leads tidy. If you hardwire equipment point to point it can be a real pain to swop things around, introduce new hardware and so on. If you want to know if you should put the compressor before or after the eq you physically have to swop equipment around or use a patchbay. A problem with either of those is that you can only accurately remember musical detail for about 1 second and so by the time you've swopped patch leads, or worse still, physically moved stuff about, you've forgotten what you heard with any real degree of accuracy. That's a major headache for a mastering engineer as we have to make informed decision on where and how to use equipment in a chain.
Our solution arrived yesterday. It's a Dangerous Music 'Liasion' - an intelligent router that lets you place your hardware simultaneouly on 2 busses and instantly switch them in and out, change their position in the chain, send any to parallel processing and monitor the pre and post inserts of both busses. This a photo of ours  :We send all 4 monitor signals to a Crane Song Avocet II. There are 4 monitor signals as there are two busses each of which has a pre and a post insert point. The Avocet also allows us to adjust the gain/volume of an instantly in order to level match diferent inputs. The photo shows the remote control unit and you can also see the 2 unit 'brain' in the previous photo below the Liasion.  All of that means that the cabling in the studio is a little involved. As it's nearly Spring we used some time to tidy things up a bit. This is a photo of the back of the Liasion after we spring cleaned! In our defense it's wired to 4 hardware EQs (a GR MEQ 2NV, Gyraf XIV, Kush Clariphonic and a Neve), 2 compressors (Maselec MLA2, API 2500), the Avocet, a PrismSound Orpheus AD/DA and an Eventide Reverb. That's a lot of XLR connections - we use 3x8 way looms plus a DB25- 8XLRF (to link the Liasion to the Avocet) and a few other standard xlr leads to hook everything together.

Tony? Do You de-reverb mix by adding sort of reverb in anti-phase? Similar as removing vocal from the mix?

Not really Darius we use either a type of advanced pattern recognition or spectral editing in some specialised software that we have from Zynaptic etc. Both use some very cpu intensive algorythms. We find anti-phase doesn't work very well with usic and particularly long dense reverb although it can be ok with simple speech although you often have to put some reverb in try to mask artefacts.. -------------------- Get your music professionally mastered by anl AES registered Mastering Engineer. Quite a lot of care and a lot of time and even then you can never remove all of the 'verb. We tend to only do it if the producer wants it done and even then it's often a last resort type of thing.
