Definately! What you said is 100 % true.
Keyboard players have a hard time playing harmonies - while guitarists only have to move the scale shape up/down on the neck, couldn't be easier!
For a whacky sound, try minor seconds (one step up) or flat fifths (6 step up).
For a strong, nice sound, try fourths (five steps up) or fifths (seven steps up).
